Although Fossorochromis rostratus occurs on the open sandy habitat in inshore waters and should be very vulnerable to the enormous fishing pressure exerted by the African fishermen with beach seines, the species seems to be able to avoid a passing net by diving into the sand and wait till the net has passed before popping out again. Of course some specimens end up in the nets but at most places Fossorochromis rostratus is still a common resident of the shallow sandy habitat.
