In the Zambian part of the lake the sand-dwelling cichlids of the shallow waters have been completely eliminated by beach seine fishing and one can find E. melanogenys only in water deeper than 10 meters. In other parts of the lake this species seems to be less affected by over-fishing—but I have no data from Burundi or northern Congo.
