Conservation: Protomelas sp. 'steveni black belly' is not evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species. Although this species is a rather uncommon inhabitant of the rocky shores along the northwestern part of the lake, there are no indications that it is threatened by specific overfishing, either by local fishermen of by collectors of ornamental fish.
