Tropheops biriwira does not occur in large numbers and most often only a few individuals are encountered during a dive. It is not targeted by fishermen and their gill nets won't be able to trap them inadvertently. The species is rather small and above all very slender and therefore difficult to catch. Since its distribution area is restricted to Mumbo Island and to the western tip (Otter Point and island) of the Nankumba Peninsula there isn't much of a population size buffer in case of an environmental disaster. I would regard this species as Vulnerable.
