Original description as Trematocranus jacobfreibergi:

ZooBank:5AA248E1-F24B-469D-A6D5-30FD1971FA31.

Conservation: Aulonocara jacobfreibergi is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2006). This status may be true for the species as a whole, but some populations are at least threatened. In particular the population at Undu in Tanzania, the so-called "Mamalela", has been almost extirpated by collectors of the ornamental trade.
