"A new species of Astronotus (Teleostei, Cichlidae) from the Orinoco River and Gulf of Paria basins, northern South America". Zookeys. (1113):111-152. Conservation: Astronotus mikoljii is not evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species. This species is probably negatively impacted by the invasion of the Orinoco River Basin by transferred invasive cichlid Caquetaia kraussii. In one lagoon in the Portuguesa River drainage between Guanare and Guanarito, where A. mikoljii was collected on many occasions over many years from 1978 to 1988, it is now absent, having been completely replaced by C. kraussii. (Perez Lozano et al., 2022:135).
