New species of Hemichromis described
New species of Hemichromis described

创建者 Juan Miguel Artigas Azas (04-2月-2021)

A work on the five-spotted group of Hemichromis from West Africa has recently been published in the journal Hydrobiologia, the paper is authored by Arnold Roger Bitja-Nyom, Jean-François Agnèse, Antoine Pariselle, Charles Félix Bilong-Bilong, André Gilles, and Jos Snoeks. The study includes the result of a mitochondrial DNA comparison for three Hemichromis species (fasciatus, frempongi and elongatus) from 100 populations from Senegal east and south to Gabon (no samplings were made in Angola). The resulting phylogenetic tree is formed by two clusters. The first (western and northernmost) cluster produced four clades (subgroups): one of them include what we know as H. fasciatus and H. frempongi, and hence the authors propose the synonymy of the latter with the former. The other three clades are formed by different populations of the southern H. elongatus. The second cluster, formed by three different clades from populations from Cameroon, has been described as a new species, Hemichromis camerounensis, with populations in Cameroon and Nigeria. The diagnosis is given as “two distinct red opercular spots on either side of the single large black opercular spot”. Unfortunately, this diagnosis appears not be applicable since many individuals in the populations of H. elongatus south to Angola show the same feature.

Four new species of Serranochromis described
Four new species of Serranochromis described

创建者 Juan Miguel Artigas Azas (23-1月-2021)

Four new species of riverine cichlids in the genus Serranochromis from the Cuanza and Okavango river systems in Angola (to where they are probably endemic) have been described by Jay Stauffer, Paul Skelton and Rober Bills in the journal Zootaxa. The four species, namely Serranochromis alvum (meaning blotches from Latin, in reference to the prominent lateral pigmentation), S. cacuchi (referring the type locality at Cacuchi River), S. cuanza (referring the type locality at Cuanza River) and S. swartzi (after the primary collector Dr. Ernst Swartz - ichthyologist at the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity) differ from each other and other Serranochromis species in a combination of morphological, meristic and color pattern features which include distance between eyes, angle of snout or mouth cleft, presence or not of ocelli in the anal fin, and others. No phylogenetic support based on DNA comparison is offered by the authors.

创建者 Juan Miguel Artigas Azas (10-1月-2021)

A new species of deep water cichlid of the genus Diplotaxodon endemic to Lake Malawi has been described by Jay R. Stauffer and Ad Konings in the journal Zootaxa. The new species rounds 15 cm in length and was captured off Thumbi East Island in Malawi, at 73 meters depth. The species is distinguished from the rest of the species in Diplotaxodon by a combination of characteristics, none of them unique to the new species. The name given: dentatus, alludes to caniniform teeth which are exposed when the mouth is closed. As other species in the genus, D. dentatus is believed to be a piscivorous due to the specialized dentition and habitat.

A new species of paedophagous Lake Malawi cichlid has been described
A new species of paedophagous Lake Malawi cichlid has been described

创建者 Juan Miguel Artigas Azas (24-6月-2020)

A new species of paedophagous cichlid from Lake Malawi has been described by Katrien Dierickx and Jos Snoeks of the Royal Museum for Central Africa [Tervuren]. The new species was previously known as Hemitaeniochromis sp. 'paedophage' and has been named Protomelas krampus. The genus was chosen because the new species has a continuous mid-lateral stripe, versus an anteriorly spotted stripe seen in Hemitaeniochromis. It is diagnosed from most of the species of Protomelas by having only one inner tooth row, versus two rows. The specific name of choice 'krampus' refers to the European folklore character Krampus, a demon who puts naughty children in a bag and takes them away. The species probably has a lake wide distribution in all Lake Malawi coasts but most of the collecting localities so far are found in the central eastern part of the Lake.

A new species of Cichla from the Essequibo River described

创建者 Juan Miguel Artigas Azas (25-3月-2020)

A new species of Cichla from the Essequibo River channel in Guyana and Venezuela has been described by Mark H. Sabaj Pérez and a group of researchers in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. The new species, Cichla cataractae, also known as falls Lukunani in Guyana, had been previously identified as Cichla ocellaris, a locally smaller species with which it is syntopic. Unlike Cichla ocellaris, which inhabits ponds and slow water courses, the new species seems to prefer areas of moderate flow and waterfalls, an habit that inspired its specific name (cataractae means waterfall or rapids in Latin). The diagnosis is based in color pattern differences in both juveniles and adults, which distinguish it from all other Cichla species. In adults, the lateral pattern in C. cataractae is dominated by two prominent dark blotches, each one with pale border.

Two new genera and species of riverine cichlids from Zambia have been described
Two new genera and species of riverine cichlids from Zambia have been described

创建者 Juan Miguel Artigas Azas (20-1月-2020)

Two new species of Pseudocrenilabrini riverine cichlids from Zambia have been described by Frederic D.B. Schedel, V.M.S. Kupriyanov, C. Katongo, and Uldrich Schliewen in the journal Zootaxa. Each one of this species has been given a new monotypic genus. Both relatively recently discovered species species had been found in nuclear and mitochondrial DNA comparisons to belong to ancient evolutive lineages older than any Pseudocrenilabrus species, which has inspired their description in monotypic genera. Their diagnosis relies mainly on subtle differences of their osteology, where the distance between the first two of a series of five small bones under the eye is used. Lufubuchromis relictus is native (as its generic name implies) to the Lufubu River (both above and below the Lufubu hydroelectric dam), which discharges into Lake Tanganyika. The specific name relictus (residue from Latin), refers to the restricted distribution of this species in the isolated upper region of an ancient plateau, where its phylogenetic position as the ancient mitochondrial sister group of all other members of the Pseudocrenilabrus lineage suggests that it represents a relict ancient evolutionary lineage. Palaeoplex palimpsest is known from the Luongo River, a tributary of Luapula River, and from several locations in the Kalungwishi River drainage, both rivers drain into Lake Mweru, and are part of the Congo River drainage. The etymology of this species is as elaborated as the diagnosis; A palaeoplex is a concept in geoecodynamics, the study of changes in geology and ecology in a given area (landscape) over time. A palaeoplex describes the full genetic variation of a given species in a given landscape over a given time, as this genus is believed to have evolved in a particular ancient landscape. A palimpsest is a parchment manuscript page, most commonly used in medieval times, that has been secondarily overwritten after layers of old handwritten letters had been scraped off, sometimes repeatedly.

Three snail-eater Haplochromis species from Lake Edward are described

创建者 Juan Miguel Artigas Azas (08-11月-2019)

Three recently discovered snail-eater Haplochromis species from Lake Edward, the smallest of the African Rift Lakes located in the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda have been described by Nathan Vranken, M. Van Steenberge and Jos Snoeks at the Royal Museum of Central Africa at Tervuren [Belgium] in the Journal of Fish Biology. The new species are Haplochromis concilians, named after its main diagnostic character of having the skin covering the snout thickened and usually merged with the upper lip, conciliare meaning join together in Latin; Haplochromis erutus is diagnosed by a combination of oral characters, its specific name meaning torn-out in Latin, referring to its oral-shelling ecology, in which soft bodies of snails are wrenched or torn out of their shells; The third species, Haplochromis planus differs from all other species of Haplochromis (except H. retrodens from Lake Victoria), by possessing a shallow, broad and rectangular lower jaw, the specific name planus, meaning flat in Latin, refers to its flat, shovel-like lower jaw. All three species are smaller than 12 cm in total length.

A new monotypic genus for Gobiochromis irvinei is described
A new monotypic genus for Gobiochromis irvinei is described

创建者 Juan Miguel Artigas Azas (10-10月-2019)

In a new paper Uli Schliewen and Juliane Weiss have described a new monotypic genus for the rheophilic African cichlid initially described as Gobiochromis irvinei (recently known as Steatocranus irvinei). The new genus was expected since in 2013, Dunz & Schliewen presented a comprehensive molecular phylogeny of haplotilapiine cichlids, where they found that Paragobiocichla irvinei falls well outside the tribe Steatocranini which contains all Confo drainage Steatocranus species, and fits instead in the just far related tribe Gobiocichlini, with its closest relatives being Tilapia busumana and T. pra. It seems then that the superficial similarities between Paragobiocichla irvinei and all Steatocranus species are the result of convergent evolution and not close relatedness. The new genus is soundly diagnosed, with the name given suggesting its close relation with Gobiocichla species from the Volta river drainage.

A new species of Thysochromis is described

创建者 Juan Miguel Artigas Azas (09-10月-2019)

A new species of Thysochromis from the Republic of Congo has been described in the Journal of Fish Biology by Gina Walsh, Anton Lamboj and Melanie Stiassny. The new species has its origin in the collection of two specimens collected in 1991 in Lake Koubambi, originally identified as Thysochromis ansorgii, but with a significant distribution disruption. The new species, Thysochromis emili is named after Emil Woolf Kentridge-Young, grandson of William Kentridge and Anne Stanwix, in recognition by the authors of their support of research in Africa. T. emili is diagnosed from T. ansorgii by a combination of characters, which include fewer scale rows between the pectoral and pelvic-fin origins; jaw teeth closely spaced and evenly implanted over entire length of both upper and lower jaws (versus widely spaced and unevenly implanted along distal portions); a supra-occipital crest that is continuous with the frontal ridge (versus terminating posterior to frontal ridge); a shorter post-orbital length and a shorter caudal peduncle length. T. emili is known from well oxygenated lakes and rivers, where it was collected in shallow, clear water shoreline waters fringed by abundant overhanging vegetation. The paper also includes recognizes the synonymy of T. annectens with T. ansorgii.

A new species of Apistogramma from the lower Atabapo drainage in Colombia has been described by Wolfgang Staeck and Ingo Schindler in the journal Vertebrate Zoology. The new species A. psammophila can be distinguished from all congeners by a combination of characters, including two horizontal stripes on body sides, two pectoral spots, a suborbital stripe becoming much wider ventrally and no caudal spot. The more similar species is Apistogramma diplotaenia. The specific name given to this species is derived from Greek and means “friend of the sand”, in reference the habitat preference of this species.

A new species of Gymnogeophagus, G. jaryi from the middle Parana River basin in Misiones, Argentina has been described by Felipe Alonso and a group of ten persons in the journal Plos One. The new species is diagnosed by meristic and color pattern differences with other species of the genus. It is established to be the sister species of G. caaguazuensis from which it differs by a longer caudal peduncle, caudal fin not lyrate, central portion of scales on dorsal portion of trunk light iridescent blue and by white spots in soft portion of dorsal fin in adult males. The specific name given to the new species jaryi means grandmother in Guarani and has been “dedicated to the Non-Governmental Organization of “Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo”, created in 1977 whose objective is to locate and restore to their legitimate families all the children disappeared by the last Argentine dictatorship”. The new species can also be found in adjacent areas in Paraguay.

A new species of Gymnogeophagus from Uruguay has been described by Andréia Turcati, Wilson Sebastián Serra-Alanis & Luiz R. Malabarba in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology. The new species owns somewhat hyperthrophied lips like the related G. labiatus and G. lacustris but it is diagnosed to differ from those species by the lack of an oblique bar from the eye to the dorsal-fin origin and by the color pattern of the caudal, dorsal and anal fins with dots (versus without them). The name given to this species is Gymnogeophagus peliochelynion with the specific name derived from Greek and meaning "black and blue lips". The new species is known from the río Arapey Grande drainage, a tributary of the lower río Uruguay basin.

Nomenclature changes in two Central American cichlids
Nomenclature changes in two Central American cichlids

创建者 Juan Miguel Artigas Azas (08-11月-2018)

A new paper by Rico Morgenstern brings to light facts that force important nomenclature changes for two well-known Central American cichlid species: Parachromis friedrichsthalii and P. loisellei. The paper details the circumstances and presents an examination of the fish collections made by Emanuel Ritter von Friedrichsthal in Central America between 1838 and 1841. The most important results establish that the fish we now know as Parachromis loisellei was in fact previously described as P. friedrichsthalii, a name we should now use when referring to this species. The fish hitherto known as Parachromis friedrichsthalii should now be called P. multifasciatus. The name Parachromis loisellei falls now in junior synonymy with P. friedrichsthalii. These changes may create confusion but get use closer to have a sounder picture of Central American cichlids taxonomy.
