Any idea what this is?

Post by Dave Schumacher » Fri Sep 21, 2007 2:46 pm

I just received a group of 4 of this mystery fish from the Central Congo area. They look like some sort of Thoracochromis to me, but I couldn't even begin to guess what kind. Anyone have any ideas? The male in the pic is only about two inches right now.

Looks like a young maleThoracochromis demeusii to me. Compare the picture in

http://cichlidae.com/gallery.php?genus=Thoracochromis.

Ctenochromis polli is another similar species, see

http://cichlidae.com/gallery.php?genus=Ctenochromis,

but the incipient development of a nuchal hump and the lack of blue iridescence on the lower lip hints to T. demeusii. However, the Congolese Haplochromines are not well studied, so the two species may be more closely related to each other then their current generic placement would suggest, and there may be other species yet to be recognized.

Thanks for the help! That does look pretty close. I'll get some more pics as they grow.
