Populating a 120 Suggestions

Post by Tillman » Sun Jun 25, 2017 1:04 pm

Hi. I am getting ready to set my aquarium back up after a cross-country move. I am an experienced aquarist but planning to try Centrals for the first time so needing some advice.

I have a 120 gallon (454 liters) that measures 4' x 2' x 2'' (1.2m x .6m x .6m). Undertank trickle filter, programmable LED lights and coarse gravel. I will decide on aquascape to create separate territories after I decide how to populate. I don't mind relocating one or more to a larger aquarium in a couple of years if size becomes an issue.

After doing some research I'm thinking I might be able to go with 2 or 3 of the following and would appreciate any feedback.

Paraneetroplus argenteu (Silver Cichlid) - Male

Amphilophus festae (Festae Cichlid) - Female

Parachromis managuensis (Jaguar Cichlid) - Male

Herichthys carpintis (Green Texas Cichlid) - Male

Rocio octofasciatum (Jack Dempsey) - Male

Unfortunately these fish other than the JD aren't really suited for those tank dimensions long term IMO.

For such a tank, I'd suggest Thorichythys (6 of 1 species) or Archocentrus/Cryptoheros (2 pairs of 1 species)

in both cases Poecilia or Xiphophorus would complete the tank
