what kind of cichlid is this

Post by john » Mon Feb 05, 2018 9:22 am

I bought this African chiclid. The pet store sold it just as African chiclid. I'd like to know the exact type. I'm sorry I haven't got better pictures. I should have cleaned the glass. I should redo the pic but I had a heck of a time catching this guy for a pic he is a fast swimmer. One thing you can't see in this pic is the small yellow/gold spots on the gills.

Philippe,
Isn't there several different types of Membas ? For example Electric Yellow Cichlid, Chipokae,Demasoni, Elongatus, Jewel Spot. Obviously mine is none of those. I guess what I am asking for is the genera. I'm new to this hobby and don't know the terminology yet.

Someone else suggested it could be a hybrid melanochromis / auratus?

Thabk you,
John

A better photo might help. There does seem to be auratus in the mix, but cannot say for sure as the photo stands.

That was my first thought as well. Melanochromis auratus. But that one should have some light yellow horizontal striping on the body and top, and this one doesn't from the looks of it. But a clearer picture would make an ID a bit easier :)

His body is so dark its hard to get a better pic. Plus when I take him out of the tank after chasing him for 10 minutes he gets even darker.

thanks,
John

seems to have a too much pointed snout for a pure strain auratus

I think that is due to the editing of the photo. This pic I was trying to get the colors to show up better and enlarge it. The previous pics show the shape better. Thanks for you help.
