OCA Growth Contest
At the November meeting, along with our free swap meet, we'll begin a fish growth contest. It will actually consist of 3 separate contests, one using a slow-growth cichlid (Thorichthys "Gold Mixteco"), one using a fast growing cichlid (Tilapia zilli) and one involving a catfish (Corydoras paleatus). Each participant will receive a bag of 4 fry for each contest he/she wants to enter. The winners will be chosen at the May OCA meeting.
There will be a $25 RMS gift certificate for the winner of each contest. Any OCA member may enter any and all contests, giving you 3 chances to win! There is no cost to participate.
Good luck!

Sounds interesting. Can we get an elaboration on the rules?

Re: OCA Growth Contest
Fred, I believe the rules are you can;t go buy an adult fish of any of the three and pass it off as the same fish. That'd be cheating
If rules were applied there'd be no way to police them. The fish will be judged for SIZE at the may meeting in "bowl show" fashion.
Something else about Novembers meeting: viewtopic.php?f=69&t=7317&p=41739#p41739

Also, I hope we can trust everyone to not use growth hormones!
Re: OCA Growth Contest
Just curious how it will be judged. Your best performing fish of the 4, total growth by all 4, or what?
I'm sure I'm putting too much thought into this.

Re: OCA Growth Contest
It will be judged purely based on size. So the biggest fish wins.
What swims in the sea, carries a machine gun, and makes you an offer you can't refuse?

Bring your biggest fish of each species to the May meeting. The overall biggest of each wins.
Don Danko is donating the Thorichthys "Gold Mixteco" and the Corydora paleatus, I'm donating the Tilapia zilli.

Re: OCA Growth Contest
For some reason, the 75 gallon with nanoluteus kills all corys, big or small. I got the nanoluteus from Kyle; would this have anything to do with it?
EDIT: Oops! I did not answer your question. Yes, the tank is full with roughly 75 gallons of water.
Maybe next year we should start off with something easier to raise!!!!

Re: OCA Growth Contest
Jom,
Unfortunately, you've stumbled on one of the no nos of fish keeping. Central Americans and Corydoras species cannot coexist in the same tank. Some Central Americans are relentless in harassing Corys to death. It seems they see them as a threat to their territory which is exactly where they both want to live, on the bottom.
If you look closely all of your corys will have no barbels on the front edge of their mouth. These are very important to a cory and one of the first things a Central American will tear off. Shortly after that they will die, if not they will die just a little later as that area of the face becomes infected etc… not a pretty way to go.

Re: OCA Growth Contest
All 12 of the fish I got are together with some small cons and small severums in a ten gallon still... Getting on just fine.... Jombi, you're supposed to feed them... Or I suppose I should have said yes when you offered the bag of nanolouteus to me
Incidently whilst working today (cleaning gutters with a back pack blower) I started to sing the Cranberries song "Zombie" but with your name instead
Were your ears ringing around lunch time?

You'll have to ask the curators of the program.Jombi21 wrote:Well that explains a lot! Thanks Dan.
