DIATOM FILTERS

Do you use them? If so how often? I have a Vortex that I use on all my tanks about every two weeks. I would like to hear your opinions.

It's a specialty filter that performs mechanical filtration of very fine particles. Unless you're plagued with something like that, I really wouldn't take the time to run it. I used to run one on my customer's tanks when I had an aquarium maintenance business way back in the 80's, but if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't run it as a matter of course. It's an appearance thing only that doesn't improve the water quality, only clarity, unless those fine particles are organic in nature.

Now, I do run one on my pool. And again, it's just to improve water clarity.

...plus the diatoms when airborne are supposedly dangerous.
