Invitation to look around

Post by Alex Calder » Tue Apr 29, 2008 10:26 am

For the full public profile "experience" start here.

To locate the one public profile "List" >> "J" >> "View"
I have also unlocked the add entry form for viewing, though it will not process submissions for security reasons.

It's a database on that other forums server. If you click list and then J, you get one result.
Search Results:Genus Species
Julidochromis dickfeldi
1 result was returned.

No worries Juan, perhaps I should learn to write better directions. :)

Let me add that the application has full search features, however I have chosen o limit the access for now as I have not tested the load in my full production environment. I can be reasonably sure of how it will behave with minimal records and searches, however once there are say 100 records and say 100 searches a minute how would the load be.

There are currently about 30 records in the database right now.
Only one has been authorized for public viewing, the rest await review and tweaking by the authors.

There are now over 70 profiles in the database at some level of completion or other, still only one made public.
I am strongly considering coding an ID tool for incomplete profiles so we can try to hammer the application.
The idea would be to display partial profiles images, names and locations only.
I will let you all know if this occurs so you can see this beast in a little more action.

Today I wrote a third state for profiles.
An id mode that shows the pictures and names of the fish.
We will use this for profiles that are incomplete but yet still useful.
39 species were added to this category so please feel free to hit the application.

We should be adding a few more full profiles soon and nearly doubling the id profiles as soon as we hammer out nomenclature markup.

( Darrell if you read this please feel free to start a discussion in a new thread in this blog. I know my questions may get exasperating at some point. )

After a ridiculous amount of coding I am running a public test of the Cichlidbase for the week end.

So far the public test has gone well, I have received a lot of good criticisms.

I have pushed the CB to v. 1.07 RC1
Changes:
Search results are now paged and include thumbnails where available.
Major improvements to the SQL queries to speed up profile loading from the database.
Elimination of tables to improve rendering of pages by the browser.
Lots of CSS related tweaks to make less noticeable features more apparent.
Several security related improvements.
Consolidation of redundant code.

Next major workload:
Design and implementation of a synonyms table and code to improve search time and
enable searching of older no defunct names, example being that classified as nomen nudum or similar situations.
Fix IE image loading issue, most noticeable in the list pages where IE is not caching the button image.
Upon completion of he synonym code we will redesign the search function into two or more separate types of search.
During this phase the search function should go from being private to public.
Addition of standard bbcode link(for forums) and html anchor(for webpages).

Other work:
As always people are hard at work making profiles and articles.
A lot of image editing and relocation to our embedded gallery to prevent broken links and allow for generated thumbnails.

Mostly implemented.
Fix IE image loading issue, most noticeable in the list pages where IE is not caching the button image.
Still working on this one.
Upon completion of he synonym code we will redesign the search function into two or more separate types of search.
Tabled this idea search will remain as an all encompassing form.
During this phase the search function should go from being private to public.
This has been added to the developer version. No need to report bugs on this version as we are regularly puttering with it.

Still need to do, glad I wrote it down.

In addition we have modified the genus and species fields. Now they auto search special tables as you type.
