Mbuna holding and collecting other females fry?

Post by stugre » Mon Jun 10, 2019 11:00 am

So I had two holding in my "holding females" tank (salousi and white tail acei) along with some other acei that I had to move in there because of a filter issue in a larger tank. The holding acei decided to spit before I could get a suitable tank organized and strip her, appears she was holding for much longer than I thought. As a result the vast majority of her fry were eaten - I did find one solitary acei fry in the tank though hiding under a ledge.

When I stripped the salousi she had a load of their usual fry but also had two fry which match the single acei fry I found in the tank (much smaller and darker compared to larger and yellow tinged fry from the salousi).

So did the salousi see the free swimming acei fry and scoop them up thinking they were hers?
