Variation of labidochromis sp. Hongi SRT

Post by NickHan » Mon Jul 15, 2019 10:16 am

Hello.

I want to know about labidochromis sp. Hongi, expecially red one.

I bought 5 more Hongi from different shop in Germany&Czech
- labidochromis Hongi super red(show)_Germany
- labidochromis Hongi deluxe_Germany
- labidochromis Hongi super red_Germany
- labidochromis Hongi sweden_Czech(A)
- labidochromis Hongi sweden_Czech(B)

Before I have, l thought "sweden" is much more red then just "super red" or "SRT". But there is not enough differences between super red/sweden.

1. Does "sweden" just express there quality, or some kind of mutation?
2. And I wait some other stocks, Hongi sunflower. I thought it is a lutino form of Hongi, because there is no black bar on its body when i watched on youtube. Is anybody who has some information about "Hongi sunflower"?

Good Day NickHan

The 5 types of Labidochromis Sp. Hongi "Hongi" Tanzania that you are asking about above,
is the exact same species known to us as Labidochromis Sp. Hongi "Hongi" Tanzania.

The different names given as stated above is the marketing strategy employed for and by
each and every breeder, line breeding Labidochromis Sp. Hongi "Hongi" Tanzania.
The line breeding of this species are aimed at and by each breeder to create their "own line"
such as for example "Hongi Sweden" ,"Hongi Deluxe" and even "Hongi Sunflower". All
the new trade names in the trade stem from one Line created in Sweden (Hongi Sweden).

For the breeders above to obtain and breed the most of the red pigmentation found
within the melanin structure of Labidochromis Sp. Hongi "Hongi" Tanzania is to provide
a feed high in Carotenoids (Antarctic & Norwegian Red krill)(Swedish Red Krill).

Selective breeding by selecting specific characteristics,
creates a new line with the selected traits. Like for example breeding intensively
to eliminate the barring to create a so called Sunflower version which is absurd.

The Labidochromis Sp. Hongi "Hongi" Tanzania in the wild on the
Tanzanian coast displays regarding different localities respectively colour
morphs ranging from a rust orange to a bright yellow.I believe
that the selective breeding added with a feed high in carotenoid
from Red Arctic Krill created this color distortions of the Wild
form.

For me Labidochromis Sp. Hongi "Sunflower" is a man made strain
VIA inbreeding intensively after Hybridization from a unknown culprit.
This was to secure the Hybrid form to stabilise in its genetic makeup.

All in All "Hongi Super Red","Hongi Super Red Show","Hongi Deluxe"
,"Hongi Super Red Germany","Hongi Sweden Czech A" or "Hongi Sweden
Czech B" all came from a Line Exported from Sweden as "Hongi Sweden".
"Hongi Sunflower" thou is a different man made creation. A Hybrid in my
conclusion because the Jaw structure and as well Vomer does not correspond with
Labidochromis Sp. Hongi "Hongi" Tanzania. New genetic material added.

Thank you for your answer. Mr. Izak Louw

Resently I found another brand name of hongi sunflower, "pseudotropheus lightfire". And after I found that name, I can agree with your opinion ->"Hybrid". I fail to have a sunflower now, and I need to consider not to stock that species if it is not kind of mutation.

Good Morning NickHan

According to sources I would like to keep alias. "Hongi Sunflower" or any marketed under a similar or pseudo Hongi name ,
was and is a hybrid form created in East Asia. The hybridization made was between the so called "Tangerine Cichlid" (created in the East)
or known to us in the trade as Metriaclima Estherae (Red X strain) and a Labidochromis Sp. Hongi (Locale Unknown). The line was
initially unstable from the beginning but generations of inbreeding and backcrossing to the original Hybrid broodstock did
secured the "Hongi Sunflower" hybrid line.I do quote.

"Resently I found another brand name of hongi sunflower, "pseudotropheus lightfire". And after I found that name, I can agree with your opinion ->"Hybrid". I fail to have a sunflower now, and I need to consider not to stock that species if it is not kind of mutation."

A wise choice indeed my friend. I am an naturalist and refrain from promoting any Hybrid cichlids .
