Aequidens diadema? (Underwater photos).

Hi.

I wanted to know your opinion about whether I have properly identified this cichlid, they are wild specimens photographed at Aracá River (Negro River basin) in Brazil.

Thanks in advance,

Dear Rafael, Dear all,
it is well known that it is sometimes difficult to determine species based on photos. Anyway, I would say it might be Aequidens pallidus. A diagnostic character of pallidus is an ''enhanced, wide light spot anterior to the caudal spot'' (Kullander 1990). However, since there is no comprehensive redescription available for A. diadema, it is currently very difficult (or almost impossible) to discriminate A. diadema and A. pallida confidently.
Greetings, IS

Rafael,
btw your photos are fantastic. Do you have the coordinates of the site where you took the photos?

Dear Ingo.

Certainly it is very difficult -at least for me-differentiating some species of the genus Aequidens, especially similar to A. diadema.

Hi Ingo.

Photos are not mine, are made by a friend (Jordi, "lopeix") who owns a boat that does tours of the Black River basin. Who now inhabit the Black River basin are faring rather badly with the historic drought that has that river (information in Spanish, his nickname is Lopeix): http://www.aquaesfera.org/panel/showthread.php?t=6710

Jordi website: http://lopeix.typepad.com/ Aracá River: http://lopeix.typepad.com/photos/aa_buc ... index.html

Jordi also to love nature (and therefore left his native Spain), Jordi is a fish lover of us.

Greetings,

Rafael.

Hi there.
Very nice topic and pictures. By the way, what type of cam did you use to make it?
Hope for answer.
Best wishes
James
