Should be pretty easy to narrow it down actually..
Where did the fish come from? I am pretty sure only one person is distributing the "Red Isletas" amphilophus, and only fairly recently at that. By the size of that thing id expect it to be more likely a barred citrinellus than anything. The"Red Isletas" havent really been available long at all. So, to see one that large by now, I would be sceptical. The 'Red-Faced' however, Im almost positive they were distributed in a very small quantity and a very short time, and that was 2 or maybe even 3 years ago. At that, all the red faced midaswhich were wild caughts, lost the red faces after a few months in captivity. The importer did not think they were much different than a barred midas and wasnt worth the importing costs for them so never brought them back in.

all i was told is that they brought him from wharf aquatics just over a year ago they said it was wild caught and called a red something. the lad who gave it me is not really in to his fish so didnt take much notice in his name

ive spoken to the owner at wharf but he cant remember if he had them in or not and he could have come from a customer

how could i tell if hes a costa rican or a normal barred midas im pretty sure hes not a red isletas

thanks

let me tell you a funny story. I believe I was the first one to bring in the Amphilophus species from Laguna Xiloá, Nicaragua. I had all three: Amphilophus amarillo, A. sagittae and A. xiloaensis. I managed to breed them all (not a great achievement). the young were exported to the USA and distributed from there, some even back to Europe.

I am still amazed to see my xiloaensis return as sagittae (or was it the other way around?). it's like the little whisper chain. give one person a name (whispered in the ear) and when the name gets back to you in the end it will have changed

so what I'm trying to say is: always attempt to find out the (real) source of your fish. even shops/traders of good reputation are in doubt sometimes.

to illustrate this: any idea which one this is?

Willem,

Based on the three species from Laguna Xiloa which I keep, your image appears to be A. amarillo. My A. sagittae bars are black and my A. xiloaensis have all peeled to white.

You guessed right Bob. But the differences you give are not at all diagnostic. So be careful.

It's just this sort of thing that results in unintentional hybrids in the hobby.

Without knowing the origin/provenance of the fish in question, it's simply not possible to diagnose it as one "species" or another. You can guess. And get a majority opinion. But you'll never know for sure.
