I have had texas cichlids spawn for me when they were about 3"long.
I started with a group of 6 youngsters and raised them in a 7foot tank.I ended up with a trio of one male and 2females.
To be honest it was hard to stop them spawning,They were always at it.
Just feed a varied diet and keep water right and they will spawn.
Males can be hard on females so lots of caves to hide in may be needed for the female.
