Herichthys ID please

Post by henknaert » Mon Dec 23, 2013 4:09 pm

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help shed some light on correct ID of the fish pictured here? It has been labeled Herichthys Labridens, however it does not really look very similar to pictures of H. Labridens I find online...I'm living and working in China, Herichthys species are only very rarely put up for sale here, so it's kind of a rare opportunity, but I'd like to know what exactly I would be buying...Sorry for the picture quality...and thanks for your input!

Definitely not a Herichthys, not to mention H. labridens. I would say Paratheraps (Paraneetroplus???) fenestratus/guttulatus or something close. Maybe a hybrid.
Cheers

I'm quite certain more than 50 % of this fish is fenestratum

Perhaps 100 %, bu it could be a hybrid

OK thanks! I was doubting between these fish pictured above and some Tomocichla Sieboldii up for sale by the same vendor...think I will go with the T. Sieboldii then. The H. Labridens mis-ID of the vendor does surprise me somewhat, esp considering Fenestratus is very common in China, and this store seems quite knowledgeable about the fish they keep (mostly European/American import rarely available here in China). Anyway, am glad I checked here.

Yes, good choice, those T. sieboldii seem to be a much safer bet. And look really nice!
