Sex my Cubans

Post by myster619 » Mon Dec 09, 2013 4:50 am

These 2 are around 8-9cm. They not overly aggressive to each other. Sometimes they flash towards each other, but then one of them turns a bit white, the other stays dark.

The darker one vented

From the pic, they both appear to be female to me, as they both have a dark area in the anterior of the dorsal.

I'd say female too,
Potentially could be vented I'm not the best at it though, If they were feeling frisky it'd be easier,

Here is an update.

I think they are both males. I tried venting but I can't see anything. They turn jet black as soon they are stressed.

The one at the back is female, I'd be pretty sure of that, the black dorsal is usually a pretty good indicator with Cubans...
The one in front however I can't tell, again I'm looking at the dorsal fin
These are my 2 males, don't know if this pic helps at all

Are the festae in your profile pic yours?
You could probably use them to help sex your Cubans pretty similar identifiers in the 2 species eg: body shape & dorsal fin..

The festae isn't mine. Your cubans look excellent. Do you still have them? Any plans on breeding them?

Ahh, nice fish festae.
Thanks mate, yeah still have them, was going to try, spent ages looking for a female, finally got one & the one at the bottom of the pic killed it that night :(
He was about 4" then about 7" -8" now.
Might try search again, but will probably have to buy another fist full of juvies if I see any around. I guy down my way breeds them, I heard he may have sold his pair though..

I got two more from a different lfs. These are bit smaller than the other two. At around 6-7 cm.
