Astatheros robertsoni 'Rio Jutiapa' Guarding Spawn

Post by Jim Cumming » Thu Sep 13, 2012 1:34 pm

I have three pairs of Astatheros robertsoni 'Rio Jutiapa' presently spawning in a 165G tank devoted to CA cichlids. They are F1's from Rusty Wessel. Here is one such pair guarding a newly laid batch of eggs.

They are 4-5" in TL. They have been very slow growers.

How are they with other fish? I might get one and put it in with my swordtails and little bocourti.

They don't seem to be particularly aggressive towards other species of similarly sized fish or even with conspecifics. I don't think there would be a problem housing one with your swordtails and 'bocourti'. When setting up to spawn, they do keep the other fish effectively away, but they tend to be quite shy actually.

Well, the eggs have hatched and the parents have moved them a couple of inches away from the slate upon which they were laid. They are in a nice secure location and I think they will survive at least to the free swimming stage. Here are a few pictures of the parents and their hatchlings. I would estimate that there are around three hundred fry in the cluster.

The mass of 'robertsoni' Jutiapa fry are just starting to free swim, under the watchful eye of the parents. A pair of Paratheraps breidohri have just spawned about 10" away on the other side of the rock. So far, no real issues, with each pair literally "minding their own business".

The babies are "up and away" today. The parents are a little more attentive (ie nervous).
