Paratheraps sp.'Coatzacoalcos' pair guarding spawn

Post by Jim Cumming » Fri Jun 15, 2012 12:27 am

This pair of Paratheraps sp.Coatzacoalcos 'Rio Carolino' F1s decided to put down a spawn inside this upturned flower pot. It's a busy tank with lots of current but the parents-to-be are holding their own. This is their first spawning attempt. The male is about 10", the female 7" and originally came from Rusty Wessel as 1" youngsters about two years ago. As you can see, the breeding dress of the male and female is very similar in both sexes, but the female outshines the male in that she has her "make-up" on (attractive orange/pink cheeks).

Northo I love the video. I am inspired to post one that I just made of my Pink Fenestratum guarding there fry which are now about 1 month old and growing. Your fish actually look similar to my Zonatum.

Hey Smitty, thanks for the kind words. I'd really like to see the video of your Pink Fenestratum doing their thing. I've never had 'zonatum' but there is some speculation the 'Coatzacoalcos' might be a geographical variant of 'zonatum'. Actually, their breeding dress looks very much like my 'hartwegi', especially my male. Cheers.

@Bob1, I have them in a 180G along with 'bifasciatus, 'synspilum' and other 'Coatzacoalcos'. I got them from Spencer Jack at aFISHionados who got them from Rusty Wessel.

When you say they maybe a variant. That is what I was thinking. I am going to look into that and see if I can get some info to support that theory.
