gargantuan convict?

Post by billie » Wed Mar 30, 2005 1:12 pm

I've recently inherited an aquarium (130 gal) that has one lone-very aggressive- fish. I've been told he's a convict, but he's huge. Everything I've read says they don't get much larger than 6in. He's 10 yrs. old, mostly blue-black with 3 faint blue-white vertical stripes. Looks like a convict...he's about 18 inches long, probably about 8 inches high. I've never heard of one so big. I have to give him away-he'll murder my fish! But I would like to know if this is really a convict. :?: :?:

Sounds more like a tilapia to me. If there was a hump I would even suspect a C. frontosa.. but definitely not a convict, not at 45 cm !

Probably Tilapia buttikoferi, check if your big convict looks like this:

Or Amphilophus citrinellus:

Good luck

Well, I've had him for 2 days, and I totally see it as a fitting name! He really is pretty though. I hope the aquarium change didn't stress him out too much. My cats are very attached to him already!
:P
