Largest cichlid in the world.

Post by Don Hiatt » Fri Apr 21, 2006 9:59 am

Now that I have your attention. lol.

I have read over and over again that Boulengerochromis microlepis is the worlds largest cichlid reaching about 80cm.

It is well documented that Cichla may reach up to and over a meter in length.

The Peacock Bass Association lists that longest fish on record as:

"Longest PB = 39 inches (a 22.5#er on a minnowbait caught in Rio Pasimoni, Venezuela lagoon in Feb. 2002)"

80cm vs 1m. Hmmm?

Bulk wise, Caquetia Umbriferus which has been reported at 30" (about 80cm) would out do cichla as would a very large Dovii...
I worry about any length reported by Fishing societies as it likely includes caudal fin, standard fish length do not. If we include tails, Boulengerochromis easily tops 1 meter...

Hi damba1,
You bring up a good point about SL vs TL. I am aware of umbriferus reaching up 80 cm, but I didn't hear if it was SL or TL. This was also a captive fish if im correct. P.dovii on the other hand is a world renowned gamefish and I haven't seen any reports of fish reaching any size that would be close to Cichla. The record from Costa Rica is 12 lb 9 oz. That is less then half that of the record Cichla.
