Here in Germany, the new species is known in the hobby since 1977. It had been identified as Gymnogeophagus rhabdotus and was known under that name until the early 1990s. Since, it had been often mistaken for Gymnogeophagus meridionalis, but is also known as G. sp. 'Rosario II' or G. sp. 'Arco Iris'.

Not only G sp norte

It seams to me that most of the fishes from the rhabdotus groep which are not rhabdotus in Uruguay are terrapurpura.

I got a group from the Rio Santa Lucia - upstraem from the type location, and one from a place near Mercedes in the west. Both seam to be terrapurpura
