Forum Newbie - Gold Severum issue

Post by chadandsal » Sat May 18, 2013 3:55 pm

Hi Folks,
We are new to this forum and wondered if anyone can help with the following please?
We have a 5 yr old Gold Severum who is not feeding and sitting on the bottom a lot. Usually the first to feed and come to us for food, this started about a week ago. We have checked water quality and done a 25% water change, so far. Water quality is good - no abnormal levels and the filter regularly cleaned 3/4 weeks) in aquarium water.

We have also tried feeding peas, and cucumber - also brine shrimp, within the last week, though normally it has either bloodworm, or pellets. Usually fed only twice a week, the GS also eats the live plant vegetation.

When the GS does swim, the lower fins seem to be clamped, but every now and then it swims up and flicks the lower fins.
Any ideas, suggestions or treatment recommendations as we really do not want to lose this fish?

As an update - a water test seemed to indicate that the water was far too acidic. Can't imagine after such a long period of stability how it suddenly got that way, but there we are. Several water changes later, new filter media (mixed with old) and a dose of baking soda the PH is now back to 7.2. Despite this the fish is still very much living on the tank floor with only occasional swims. It also seems that lying on the sand floor is also creating friction sores on the underside of the fish.
Can anyone offer any suggestions to help restore this fish to health?

Does this fish swim into the water column at all? I'm just wondering about the swim bladder.

Only occasionally now and it seems only with great effort. Soon sinks back down. Could it be swim bladder and what remedy would you recommend?

If it's the swim bladder, there really isn't much you can do for it. The best thing for it would be a bare bottom tank so it doesn't rub itself raw on the bottom since it doesn't swim well.
