Hemichromis fasciatus

Post by Don Hiatt » Tue Dec 13, 2005 5:34 am

Hi all,
I noticed that Hemichromis fasciatus is missing from the Hemichromis section in cichlid pictures. Is there a reason for this or is it just an oversight?

The reason may be that Juan does not have one in his files, or that noone has donated a nice quality photo of one for the gallery. The gallery is always in need of good quality photos, especially of species not having a photo yet. (I'm thinking of ones like Apistogramma!) So maybe people can show their photography in the general section with photos that they would like to see in the gallery.

The reason I asked is the fact that it wasn't listed at all and it is a fairly common member of the genus in captivity.

Thanks Lisa.

Don,

Thanks for pointing things like this out. The reason is that the reference I was following coinsidered Hemichromis faciatus a junior synonym of H. elongatus, and I had it classified as such. After your note I researched the current status and I upgraded today following Eschmeyer's California Academy of Sciences database and Anton Lamboj's book, so Hemichromis fasciatus has now has specific status in this page:

http://www.cichlidae.com/gallery/species.php?s=1523

As Lisa very well points out, the CRC catalogue lacks pictures of many cichlid species yet. As of today, the Cichlid Room Companion database illustrates 743 species with quality pictures. This is very good but there is still a way to go. If you or anybody would like to contribute to the catalogue you could post your pictures here (Probably in the general area section), or could probably send me a message. Our policy is to show the cichlids at their best (Or at least close to it) so people can admire their beauty, so we would like to have quality pictures for the species. Habitat pictures are equally welcomed.

No problem Juan. This is the best online source for information about cichlids and it is only going to get better by all of us sharing our knowledge.

Hi Juan

Might you be able to explain to me how to send you images of cichlids per your request for photos?

I have a few that might be helpful to contribute.

thanks,
Mark
