New jewel cichlids

This past weekend I won 6 red jewel cichlids (1-1½") on a mercy bid of $1 at another city's fish auction.
I figured that I could temp them for now and somebody in my area would take them, but both the roomie and I have decided we like them and want to keep them. My problem is I don't have anything for them. They are currently living in a 10 gallon tank, which I know won't do for long.
What is the minimum size I could get away with to keep these in for the next 2 years before I move and I'm able to upgrade to something larger at that point. I currently have a nice area where a 3 foot tank will fit nicely, and a 4-foot tank would fit but it might be kind of crowded. Also with a 4-foot I would probably have to brace the floor, which is fine.
Thanks in advance

The problems will arise when they start breeding. Virtually all tanks will then be too small for more than the breeding pair. As far as I know, 10 footers have been tried. But, on the other hand a 80 * 40 cm footprint - that is 2 feet 4 * 1 foot 4 tank will suffice for a pair.

I'm afraid breeding will start around the age of 1 year, bodylength 2 inches or slightly more

Is there any way to prevent them from breeding? Obviously without destroying their water quality lol

The only way to stop breeding is to separate the sexes. :-|

Okay so if I end up with a pair of them, or say they sex out and I'm left with four of one sex, how small could I get away with for now? And for now being the next couple years.

Most likely you will need 2 tanks, as the odds of having only one seks are 1 in 8. I think a 2 * 1 * 1 foot tank might possibly suffice for 1 fish, but not for 2 or 3.

They can grow to 15 cm or more, and if the are not breeding, growing is what they will do.
