Do you feel like a challenge?

An office partner of mine bought some fish at an Auction in Akron Ohio.
They didn't work out for her....and unfortuanetly she didn't keep the bag identifying the fish.
After they disrupted her community tank, I came to work to find them in a bag on my office desk.

I've taken some pics and wonder if you all have any idea what they could be:

Thanks for any help you can offer. Personally I'm anal retentive about making sure I know
what the fish was called when purchased. I'd hate to have to dispose of these guys just because
someone neglected to keep track of their name.

Thanks,

Kyle May

Not a South American, but rather Tilapia mariae from West Africa. I believe it is sometimes referred to as the spotted Tilapia nd the Mangrove Tilapia. Yours look very nice with a good bronze color and red on the breast and in the fins. Congrats on the spawn to. They are fantastic parents. Do be careful, as they get bigger (over a foot) they can get fairly aggressive.

Ás Sam said, a Tilapia

I've seen T marinae, a long tima ago, and in my mint these were higher build, and lacked the red on the breast. However, T marinae is a species with a large distribution, and therefore they could be just another variety

Still, I'd suggest inquiring at the Africa subforum

Absolutely T. mariae, though usually the row of spots on adults goes all the way to the gill cover. The color is very typical for what I've seen of them otherwise. Back in the 1970s they were sold as Tiger Tilapia, because the young have vertical bars up to a considerable size. The bars turn to spots at sexual maturity.

Thanks for the input. These look pretty close to every pic I can find of Tilapia Mariae.
