Re: Disaster in the Cichlidarium

Hi Willem. Did you move the stand as well as the tank while you refitted your 'Cichlidarium'?, the 'new' position (however slight the difference) may have created new stresses? I work for a firm that makes fish tanks and cabinets, although I don't make them myself. I know we don't sell any tanks wit...

Re: SKin disease? Fungus?

I don't think it's fungus, but you could dose the tank with salt ( a good all-round med) and see if there's an improvement. Doesn't look like lymphocytis (a viral infection) either. Are the fish wild caught ?, could it be a burrowing parasite ?, I've had 'maggot' like parasites in the soft tissue be...

Re: Gold Severum symptoms

Hi Dana. I see this occuring mostly in mature tanks where the filters/substrate holds a large amount of organic waste. The filters are working fine, so no water quality issues, but the levels of bacteria are very high which might be a breeding ground for certain pathogens. Gravel vac and clean spong...

Re: Gold Severum symptoms

Hi Dana. From the pic it looks like the outward signs of a serious head infection (similar to, if not, HITH). The damage is being done deep inside the head cavity, the pimples are the 'infection' coming to the surface, it may be followed soon by 'popeye' and inflamed nasal area. It is very serious, ...

Re: Haitiensis spawn

Thanks guys ! The female haits seem to be the most aggressive of the species, males do seem able to control them but other fish seem a bit vulnerable. The pair with the fry don't flair at me and the big male is no glass banger.....just a big eating machine :) . The males are very powerful, you would...

Haitiensis spawn

I've finally got a spawn from one of my pairs of haitiensis, pity it wasn't from a large pair, but there's plenty of fry anyway ! Re: Haitiensis forms

Hi Duane. Your female is very changeable, mine always looks as she is in the pic. Is your male a big eater?, mine is very greedy and doesn't like sharing with the female. I'm thinking of separating the pair for a while to see if it'll stimulate spawning when I re-introduce them (into a bigger tank).

Re: Haitiensis forms

Hi BC. Yes, there does seem to be a wide variation in body shape with this species. I have 2 large pairs from one source, and 2 small pairs from another. I'm anxious to see what (if any) differences there are when the small ones get big........they certainly show differences to the large ones when t...

Re: Ramsdeni vs. Haitiensis

The haits BC is referring to belong to me :) . The males and females of my new batch are showing nuchal humps at 3", these come and go, but I agree that it seems to be in response to 'excitement' caused by the close proximity of conspecifics. The females are also jet black from nose to tail, but the...

Re: Nandopsis haitiensis, a few pics..

Thanks for all the pointers Mr Fm, I've tried most of them apart from the reducing of the water hardness (makes sense, rain= lower hardness etc) which would occur during the rains. I'm not desperate to spawn them though, I'm happy that they're really healthy and getting to their potential. They'll s...

Re: Nandopsis haitiensis, a few pics..

Hi Alex. I have never had any health issues with this pair of Haits, although I do recall a different fish having a red 'wound' type mark on its side when it was around 5", I think it survived without treatment. Is she sure the Midas aren't attacking the other fish just enough to let secondary bacte...

Time flies, I thought I'd posted some recent pics of my Haits, but it was a year ago :) . Here's a few fairly recent ones.....they still haven't spawned.....too busy eating !!!!! Male is easily 13+ now.. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v363/Grummie2/31-5-07018.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums...

Re: MIXTECO VS. TMEEKI

The fish you seek IS out there somewhere, if you look in the 'Aqualog South American Cichlids 3' there's a picture of a wild Xanthic meeki, aparently it was from the Rio de la Pasion, Guatemala. The picture was taken by U. Werner. I can't see this fish being missed by professional breeders, someone ...
