Re: need id on some new cichlids i just got

It would be good to see pics of this fish in a few months time if you still have it. The mass produced fish can be a lot different from their wild counterparts, it'll be interesting to see if this fish shows more of its real self as it matures.

Re: need id on some new cichlids i just got

From that pic the head shape is not right for 'perlmutt', but the colour does not look right for 'lombardoi' either.

Re: need id on some new cichlids i just got

There are some shockingly bad lombardoi around at the moment, thin stripes/too many stripes/yellow females!, the list goes on. The fish pictured though is a lab. 'perlmut' as I said earlier, probably czech bred.

Re: Territoriality and Aggression with Central American Cich

Very interesting observation Jim, I'm itching to give it a try, just need some suitable fish and some pots! I have some asfraci that might appreciate the upturned pot, they like boulders but don't seem too bothered about defining the territory, maybe this'll help!

Re: Is this an Albino?

Hi Alton, thanks for posting a better picture of the fish. I believe Lisa and I are correct, this fish has a reduced pupil size, not uncommon in the fish world. Can you see a pupil?, even in albinos its plain to see, a leucistic eye would be no different to a normal coloured fishes eye. I'm guessing...

Re: Is this an Albino?

Its not too clear from the pic but I think the fish has a reduced size pupil. I get this sometimes with angelfish, they're usually blind in the eye (or at least have very little light response), and may show different body colouration (night colours). It is sometimes damage while young or a genetic ...

Re: manacapura red shoulder angelfish?

The pic on the Angel+ website of the juvenile is exactly like mine were when young. The video is fantastic, I wish I was able to grow plants like that and the manacapuru look stunning! The other pic is tricky, I don't like commenting on pics like this because fish in the flesh can look much differen...

Re: manacapura red shoulder angelfish?

These, to the best of my knowledge are Manacapuru 'red back' angels. They are tank bred (F number unknown) from Czech or German origin; I would love to see a true wild version to compare....maybe someone has one ? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v363/Grummie2/036.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/alb...

Re: manacapura red shoulder angelfish?

Try to get the history of the parents. IMO true manacapurus are very difficult to induce to spawn (sexes are also hard to ID), if they're breeding every couple of weeks chances are they're NOT manacapuru just domestic silvers (or different wild type) with an orange crown. Manacapuru are tall fish (a...

Hi Monte. From the pic you seem to have a male, there's no black mark in the front dorsal fin area and the genital area seems to indicate male (as well as the fish's size).

Re: T. Asfraci breeding help

It may be seasonal, mine haven't shown signs of breeding for 3 or 4 months, whereas earlier in the year they were always at it. I just have a male rotkeil sev in with them, powerhead, slate and tubes. temp 78 ish with natural daylight + a few hours tube lit. I don't go mad on the water changes, usua...

Re: Tomocichla asfraci

Yes Rick, these were from Conkel. Michael, I don't know their catch location but I'm sure Rick will have a word with Don for me if he comes over to the UK to give a talk. These fish do present a challenge, hard to raise, and when grown hard to to spawn, I really need to revise hatching methods with ...

Re: Tomocichla asfraci

I'll be doing the same approach with my pair. How big is your pair again? male is easily 10" and stocky, female 7" and a bit the worse for her past (looks wise), but well bonded, very little aggression between the two. Here's pics of the 2 juveniles, they're 3"+ now. http://img.photobucket.com/albu...

Re: Tomocichla asfraci

Hi Rick. There's been a couple of recent spawns (on the glass floor) but no hatching. I'm going to put a new 'surface' in for them and see if they'll lay on it.......I'll have to remove the spawn again methinks.
Pick of the fry shortly.....
