Re: Julis guarding eggs

Thanks for the compliments! As I said, they are in a 240G. I guess that qualifies as a good size :D

I got them as BAP fish at an OCA meeting. I forgot who bred them, but I got them for a song. Join you local fish club, and get quality fish for cheap

Re: 55 Gallon Tanganyika Help/Advice

I realize that it is fairly common for keepers of cichlids from Lake Malawi to have 'all male' tanks with many species of fish but only one fish from each species. This allows them to enjoy the colors only the males of many species display. With keepers of cichlids from Lake Tanganyika I have never ...

Julis guarding eggs

For the last couple of years my 240G has been overrun by Julis. I have the comparatively small species known as Julidochromis marlieri 'Gombe', and they live in the crevices of the rock background I have in that tank. They might not be the most visible fish in the tank, but there are literally hundr...

Re: New tank setup - tankmate help

Another point to consider is that Tropheus have vastly different diet requirements than the other fish you mentioned. Tropheus need a veggie only diet and you risk them easily developing bloat if fed pellets or flake that contain more protein, like the food that you would normally feed to other Tan...

Re: New tank setup - tankmate help

90G with calvus, marlieri, and a type of shellies sounds great. An obvious choice to complement these fish would be a type of cyprichromis to populate the upper regions of a tank - that's where the 90G will shine, due to its height! Adding tropheus to this kind of tank is a very bad idea in my exper...

L. brevis 'M'toto'

I've had L. brevis 'Ikola Sunspot' for many years, and they are fairly common in the hobby in my area (NE Ohio). The other day I got hold of four L. brevis 'M'toto'. At least in these parts that's a more unusual color variety, which is a lot more stripey than the Ikola Sunspot. My four individuals w...

Re: "Lamprologus" ocellatus

That looks to me as if it should go in a peer reviewed scientific journal, but the question is, is there a journal that publishes stuff like that in Danish? My background is in chemistry, and I know that there are few people left who publish their findings in German. The impact factor is just so muc...

Re: Xenotilapia ornatipinnis

Congratulation on a good choice! I could not agree more with Alvin's advice - less is often more. If you can restrict yourself to fewer species per tank, that often allows you to see more of the natural behaviors of the species you have chosen. For me, that's what it's all about!

Re: My new aquarium

Very cool! Probably not too many people have successfully kept Tropheus with the rest of the fish on your stocking list, but I guess it goes to show again that unusually large tanks can allow for unusual stocking combinations! If you don't mind a few more questions, how large is your group of Trophe...

Re: My new aquarium

That tank caused me sleepless nights the first time I saw pictures of it - I can't figure out how to remodel my basement so it will fit one like it! Absolutely amazing, and simply a dream setup. What's the current stocking list?

Many thanks for your response. Your English is very good. I know a shop in Germany that has exported fish to China, but I did not ask to what province or city. The store is www.maltavi.de. Their web site is not very good, and only in German, but they have very nice fish. I think they probably sold t...

Extravaganza 2010 Photos

I just got a chance to have a closer look at the December Bulletin, and wanted to take the chance to congratulate Kyle on his excellent photo coverage of the 2010 Extravaganza. There are a lot of great shots in the bulletin already, but Kyle wrote he took over 500 of them and will be using them over...

Re: Sandsifter/Muddwellers & Cyps

Sorry for getting back to this post so late! @Tim - we will definetely have to do some sort of visit exchange this winter, since I am pretty keen to have a look at your tanks myself! Regarding the cyp tankmates, I have added a colony of L. similis that I picked up at the Extravaganza. I've kept an e...

Re: My tank (Cyprichromis and Enantiopus melanogenys Kilesa)

Beautiful fish! I especially like the cyp males. I would also be interested to hear more about the cichlid hobby in Beijing. Here in the US you don't usually see cichlids from Lake Tanganyika in common pet stores. Some people might be lucky and live close to a specialty store, but most of us get the...

Something i forgot to mention...if you look back at the first pic and see the black coiled tubing; that's my sink/countertop area and that red handled ball valve controls the air to that tube. Because I'm dexterity challenged  , I never have really mastered the snatch~n~twist method of bagging...

I agree with Lew - one of the nicest doors I have seen in a while! I was hoping there would be a fish tank in the picture as well, but I guess I shouldn't ask for too much

lol...or Mr. Subotnik. I have the article saved on my laptop, I will get it to you this weekend... That was a good article, Mr Subotnik. I recommended it for reading to several people on Cichlid-forum.com, and they seemed to get all the information from it they needed, and then some. I am looking f...
