Re: Undescribed Equadorian cichlid?

This old CRC thread was recently brought to my attention by a fellow cichlid hobbyist I've connected with through Facebook. It's remarkable that it hadn't been "resurrected" earlier when we were discussing the fish being circulated in the hobby as Mesoheros ornatus (or ex-Cichalsoma ornatum ) which ...

Re: Ornatum or Gephyrum

If you guys would be willing to get me DNA samples from your gephyrums I could do DNA analyses and tell you where they end up. These days its even much more precise with the Next Gen sequencing. If we can get samples it would also nicely complete our story in the above publication. Thanks Olda Dr. ...

Re: New species: Thorichthys panchovillai

In written correspondence with Juan Miguel, he confirmed that this is now the scientific name for what was being circulated in the hobby as Thorichthys sp. "Mixteco" and T. sp. "Coatzacoalcos". The CRC species profile includes an interesting discussion about the taxonomy of the genus Thorichthys as ...

Re: Ornatum or Gephyrum

For comparison, here is a photo of my male Mesoheros gephyrum (Rio San Juan) when he was about 5 to 6 inches long. (I'm guessing he was a little more mature than David's male at the time I took the photograph.) exCichlasoma gephyrum male.jpg It might be possible to get a better idea of the coloratio...

Re: Ornatum or Gephyrum

Perhaps it's the different lighting used in the photographs, but the base color of the specimen photographed by Willem Heijns looks different from David's. However, in the same CRC species profile of ornatum are photos of two other fish from Seiichi Hamada. These were the specimens that attracted a ...

Re: exCichlasoma gephyrum spawn

I apologize for the delayed reply. The male was about 10 inches (25 cm) TL and the female was about 9 inches (23 cm). Unfortunately, the pair bond broke down once again before the fry got to the free-swimming stage and I lost the male. They spawned in a 150 gallon (568 L) aquarium, where they were h...

Thanks for pointing me to the proper thread, Philippe. I have an electronic reprint of the full article and will ask Juan Miguel if it would be possible to share it c/o CRC.

exCichlasoma gephyrum spawn

For the third time, my wild-caught exCichlasoma gephyrum pair have spawned. The spawn took place in the same 150 gallon aquarium in which they've grown up since I acquired them as 1" juveniles in August 2010. After their previous two spawns, I've had to remove the male because the pair bond broke do...

Cryptoheros nanoluteus tending fry

A pair of Cryptoheros nanoluteus tending their newly free-swimming fry. Not a particularly large batch. They were kept with some Sahyadria denisonii which I did not get a chance to remove until the fry reached the free-swimming stage, so I probably lost some to predation. https://www.youtube.com/xtN...

Re: Cichlasoma cf ornatum spawned (video)

My pair have spawned for the second time. Although they have excavated extensively under some large driftwood in the aquarium, they seem to prefer spawning in the open where is considerable water movement.

Jim,
My observations are similar to that of Sal and DRE.
I suspect that your fish is the same species (exCichlasoma gephyrum) that we have been discussing in this forum and that your remaining specimen is a male based on the markings on the gill plates and cheeks. Here is a photo of my male.

Good luck with the fry.

Nicely done! You're obviously doing something right.

Perhaps the third time is the charm (as the saying goes). Good luck!

Re: "Heros" ornatus

I found recent YouTube video posted by an aquarist from Colombia "salazarcasas" labeled "ExCichlasoma ornatum". The video is interesting in that the fish, which is housed in a mixed community aquarium, appears to be different from the fish that has been recently collected and introduced into the hob...
