Almost certainly just hard water deposits breaking up. Nothing to be concerned with.

Lee, I enjoyed those photos, but I enjoyed your subsequent comments even more!

The comment about the "hillside with a tree and a shoal of neon tetras" was hilarious!

Re: Heater info

Too many variables to make a definitive response..... However, I have to think either your house is very cold, your thermometer is broken, or your Eheim heaters just aren't working! I've always thought most heater "ratings" are greatly over-sized. For instance, I have a 1000 gallon system running on...

Re: the end of the Cichlidarium

Sorry to hear about this situation. The largest tank I've ever had blow is a 1 meter tank. Even that was a disaster. As a result, I have a strong preference for acrylic (especially for the large tanks). I know exactly how you feel. After the mess of my "mini" blowout I was just about done with the h...

Funny! They all look like females to me too!

More interestingly though, what's with the "2 Pellets" and "3 Pellets" stickers? Experimenting or expecting a fish-sitter? :D

Re: new tank

The tank will almost certainly cycle very quickly with the "old" filters on it. You can ease any issues with water changes, but I doubt you'd have many or any issues at all. I've done the very same thing many times in the past.

I've used the BA tetras based on their similar appearance too. I need something just a touch bigger, and if Astyanax would pick off fry that would be a PLUS for me! Hahaha!

Re: How much space is needed?

Some of these discussions won't ever end, but.... The truth is, a cichlid has a measurable average territory size in its native environment. Most cichlids, contrary to some opinions, don't spend their days swimming up and down the lengths of their rivers or circumnavigating their lake. They often re...

Re: Amphilophus nourisatti Pictures

Those are definitely not the same fish, so you're not crazy to wonder! The first first is certainly not a nourisatti. The second fish appears to me to be a nourisatti hybrid (based on the nourisatti mouth structure), perhaps with bocourti. At least that one "could" be a nourisatti of an unusual colo...
