Re: Cichlidae classification

Why hasn't anyone come up with an alternative method yet?
Actually there is an alternative approach, the Phylogenetic taxonomy. The advocates of this approach even have their own Code of Nomenclature, the PhyloCode. For instance new species are not in n...

Re: Cichlidae classification

I've felt for a long time that traditional classification doesn't suit modern thinking about evolution. We try to pigeon-hole everything into discrete little boxes, but in reality, organisms are part of a continuous spectrum of variability. Why hasn't anyone come up with an alternative method yet?

Re: P. Buettikoferi

Nice fish, thanks for posting! They should be more popular with those colours!

I might take you up on your kind offer if I had any room! I have guntheri and Ctenochromis polli spawning at the moment so I need all the space!

Re: P. Buettikoferi

Have you definately got P. Buettikoferi? I've seen P. nigrofaciatus wrongly labelled as Buettikoferi. If you have genuine Buettikoferi please tell me the source as I would be very interested in this species. It is quite peaceful according to Lamboj's book. P. nigrofaciatus was very interesting to ke...

Re: Biotope Ideas?

Hmm, if you like west african cichlids you could go for a pair of kribs and/or blockheads. They mix well with synodontis catfish, Congo Tetras, African Longfin Tetras and African Red eye tetras.

Re: Thysochromis Ansorgi & S. tinanti

I don't see any problem with that although if you were to get both the ansorgi and the tinanti breeding at the same time it may cause chaos!
Make sure the tinanti have a good water flow to ensure well oxygenated water. This becomes more important the bigger they become.

Re: S. casuarius and S. tinanti
there's not much info on these fish
You need "The Cichlid Fishes of Western Africa" by Anton Lamboj. I've also written about these for the BCA and published the same article here: http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=26874 "The Truth is out there"

Re: S. casuarius and S. tinanti

The S. tinanti spawned again about six weeks after the first time.
Again, it coincided with a drop in atmospheric pressure:

They spawned on 11th January, the Friday on the chart!

Re: S. casuarius and S. tinanti

Check this out, it's a recording of the barometric pressure from Stansted on the week leading up to the spawning: http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c189/sixfoottank/Junk/pressure.jpg It starts falling on Monday, has a little dip on Thursday and then bottoms out on Saturday, the day of both spawns! I...

Re: S. casuarius and S. tinanti

In hindsight I think you are completely spot on. About 10 days previous, I had moved the fish into larger tanks, which contained fresh water. A few days later there was a very heavy rainstorm that lasted about 12 hours, and there was probably a large drop in pressure at the same time. The fact they ...

S. casuarius and S. tinanti

My African Blockhead Cichlids (Steatocranus casuarius) and Slender Lionhead Cichlids (Steatocranus tinanti) both spawned on the same day! (Saturday 1st December). How random, must be something in the water Fingers crossed I can get some fry, they are great little fishes. Not a bad result after buyin...

Re: My new Steatocranus irvinei

Wow, what an awesome fish! I'm trying to collect Steatocranus. So far I have only found casuarius and tinanti. I have been breeding and selling casuarius for nearly ten years, I can't breed them quickly enough and they always find good homes! Is there a list of all the related species and do you kno...

very quiet

It's seems very quiet on this board. Where is everyone? I can't be the only person interested in west africans. I am breeding Steatocranus casuarius and trying to breed S. tinanti, any tips for this species? I've also been successful with P. pulcher and P. taeniatus and I'm looking for Tilapia joka,...
