Re: 75g Uruguay tank, suggestions?

I'd recommend Crenicichla minuano, they are a small mellow pike cichlid from Uruguay. I have 3 pairs and I haven't had any problems between them or with other Uruguayan fishes.

Checkout Felipe's Website: aqvaterra.com or on facebook at Aqva Terra Eco Tours. Felipe has pictures of almost all collection locations throughout Uruguay and has many from Bella Union.

Re: Gymnogeophagus

Bas I thought the Paraguayan balzanii didn't need as much of a cool down since they are a more northern species. Anyway the point is mute since the OP isn't interested

Re: Gymnogeophagus

You would be alright with a group of G. balzanii since your temp does get into the upper 60s. It would be better if it got a bit colder but getting below 70 would be enough of a cool down for this species in my opinion. This year all of my Uruguayan fishes got a cool down into the low 60s and for a ...

Re: Geo ID help!

Looks like altifrons to me. Here are a couple quick ways to distinguish the two. G. altifrons: lack of facial markings, midlateral spot covers 4 scales or less (sometimes not present), and spotted caudal pattern G. abalios: lack of facial markings, midlateral spot present (larger than 4 scales) and ...

Re: Geo I.D From AUS!!!!

These specimens do look a lot like G. brachybranchus to me. The only thing bugging me is there is no preopercular stripe in these photos which is a distinguishing feature of this species. Maybe someone else can chime in....

Re: Gymnogeophagus sp. Rancho?

The other is on the Brasilian border, If I remember correctly, on the Rio Cuareim, but I never went there. Whether any labiatus comes from this place, I could not tell Felipe called this location Invernada. There is no G. labiatus from this location but a very attractive gymnogenys with big lips. I...

Very interesting fish! How big are they? I agree with Matt that it looks more like brasiliensis than rhabdotus

Re: Cichlasoma "La Palma" (Uruguay)

Nice! We collected there a couple of weeks after your group. I currently have 7 of these fish. They haven't grown too much for me but thats most likely due to the fact I put them back into winter mode. Glad to see some photos of your thought :D

Re: "yerbalitos" spawn :))

Trying moving her at night next time. After the tank has been blackout for awhile, just blast the light and you should be able to just scoop her out. The quick change from dark to light stuns the fish, making it easy to catch the fish you desire. Also it should be a less stressful than chasing them ...

Re: bringing home gymnos soon, LFS temp issue?

There are natural variations in temperature in the wild that happen all the time so a slight temperature drop is not going to screw up their internal clock. I wouldn't worry about a heater unless your summers are not all that hot. I've had to use heaters in the past because the coast Southern Califo...

Re: gymnos temp ranges

I agree that the 64-66F cool down period will be fine. These fish are not wildly aggressive and since they are harem breeding fish I would add a couple more females to your tank. Matt I've had similar experience with a couple of my gymnos. I had some male gymnos (Norte's and labiatus) in with my Rot...
