Re: What is a species?

Hi I´m pretty sure that within 10 or 20 years the actual Linnean definition of species will be abandoned and the current taxonomic classifications will be abandoned as being invalid. Nowadays each taxonomist has his own opinion and a new classification is just that, an opinion. Everybody follows it ...

Re: What kind of cichlids are these?

Hi

Very likely hybrids, difficult to tell, that´s the problem with Mbunas, at least half the fish in the trade are hybrids. It´s the most hybridized group of cichlids by far.

Re: Greetings from uruguay

Hi Be very careful with that Ich. Two years ago Miguel Figueiredo and Delfim Machado were also in Uruguay with Felipe Cantera and brought fish with what seemed Ich and they lost almost all the fish, nothing cured it. Another friend brought Killies from Uruguay which had an unknown disease and he los...

Re: Electric Blue Jack Dempsey hybrid or not?

Hi In fact the argentinian who bred them stated categorically that they were not hybrids, they are a mutation. A weak one as most mutations who generally already derive from highly inbred fish. There are a few mutations that are vigorous like the pigeon blood or the blue ramirezis but they are excep...

Re: Herichthys bartoni (pair bond / spawning)

Hi

Media Luna has unusual chemical charactheristics, namely 53 GH! I´m sure this is the cause of the problems that breeders had with the yellow labridens.

Re: Geos " Bahia Red"

Hi

They are a local form of "Geophagus" brasiliensis. It´s a matter of opinion if the many local forms of this species are real species or not, I don´t think so. They are easy and undemanding, free breeders.

Re: What are the Willem Heijns guidelines?

Hi The problem with the laws is that the state expects them to be followed...So there would be more regulations to be obbeyed that in the end don´t help anyone and just create problems. We should not forget that who makes the laws are not people from the hobby, they may be advised by biologists but ...

Re: What are the Willem Heijns guidelines?

Hi When the government bureaucrats start to meddle only bad things came from them. Yes, there are many very big fish who are bought by insuspecting fish keepers who really don´t know what they are buying. Many of these fish are actually produced for the food industry( Pacus, Catfish, Tilapia etc) an...

Re: Alcoapia alcalicus

Hi I just see this experience as a proof that this species endures the conditions in Lake Magadi and in the other two lakes where it was introduced but it doesn´t really apreciates or needs them. Actually it seems that many specimens of this species when captured and mantained in the water where the...

Re: Alcoapia alcalicus

Hi

Keeping Alcolapia with Dicus and Acarichthys, acid water fish, is something I would never dream doing but aparently you are doing it without any problem, and they breed! It shows that the tolerance of fish and adaptability is bigger than we might think. Interesting.
