Re: Malawi Mbuna Hybridization

Hi Freude88, Yes, that is an excellent idea. You rotate the fish that you want to breed. But let me warn you that when you start to breed fish you will need more tanks then you think. lol Your "base" tank with your groups. Then your "breeding" tank Then you will need at least (2) holding/grow out ta...

Re: Malawi Mbuna Hybridization

Hi Freude88, Any mouthbrooder can breed with another mouthbrooder. Please be a responsible hobbyist and avoid cross breeding with species only tanks. It is so important to keep the strains clean. We just don't know when we are going to get cut off from obtaining wild stock. Be it our country banning...

Wow, This book is really getting rare, last time I looked around it was going for about $350.00, now over $1000.00!!!! We sold one a few years ago at a BITCH auction for over $300.00 http://www.amazon.com/South-American-Eartheaters-Thomas-Weidner/dp/0966825519/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=13860352...

Re: Lake Malawi national reserve fish

Unfortunately there is not a program or National Park for the fish in Lake Tanganyika. There are a couple of ways to determine if a fish is at risk. One is the IUCN Red list, which sadly is way behind on evaluating fish many have not been evaluated for 10+ years, but it is starting place. Here is an...

Re: Lake Malawi national reserve fish

Malawi doesn't have the money to police the country let alone the lake. It is common knowledge that you are not allowed to collect or fish in the National Park but there is no one to enforce it. But it is buyer beware, importers like to put collection sites that are more desirable then others, and s...

Re: Battling Water Loss and High Humidity at Home

Lisa,

Personally I think the Acetate works best. If you are nimble with shrink wrap then it should be okay, but I tend to fight with it! Basically you are wrapping the egg crate in the shrink wrap.

Re: Battling Water Loss and High Humidity at Home

Lisa,

I didn't grow any "plants" but I do have a good algae growth on pots and castles. The acetate is clear, so the light goes right through it, the shrink wrap is clear too, the sticky back shrink wrap is more opaque.

Re: Battling Water Loss and High Humidity at Home

Kyle, Very nice! It is amazing how much humidity you can cut down with a good lid on your tank. I had egg crate on all of my tanks, while it was great for keeping the fish in the tank, it doesn't keep the water in the tank. I am really cheap, and I have a lot of tanks and the thought of buying glass...

Re: Breeding Groups

Hi J, I usually like to get 12 - 18 fish, and set them up in a minimum 55 gal tank. I raise them up together and I don't worry about the ratio. When you have a larger group it is harder for one fish to get single out. Multiple males are good, the males can take aggression out on each other instead o...

Re: Treating Bloat w/Clout

Mark,

Yes Clout is a nasty med, but I would continue until you don't see any more symptoms, sounds like you got it early, but your are correct don't stop now.

Also don't feed them at all, no matter how much they beg! Even for a few days after you are finished with the Clout.

Re: Tropheus breeding and raising at "PISCES" farm

James, Really??? Really? I don't think the stress of stripping, is nearly as bad as the stress of holding to term. I don't think tropheus even remember if they were stripped. The argument is that you are missing out on observing a natural behavior. Stripping is a personal choice, I am not saying tha...
