Re: Redline Severum/Raspberry Severum

Interesting. Well, as you say they're not golds or red spotted. I did have some gold x rotkeil that produced some fry with reduced banding and a paler overall look; maybe these are something similar. Horizontal red bands are usually a sign of some 'mouthbrooding' bloodline maybe? I think you'll be t...

Re: Redline Severum/Raspberry Severum

Hi Jonathan. Any chance you could post a picture. When small, the 'red spotted' variety look a lot like golds, but start to increase the red markings at around 2.5". Some of the 'red spotted' have red horizontal lines across the body, I'm just wondering if someone has just 're-branded' the 'red-spot...

Coelotilapia joka

Is anyone keeping this species or has seen it recently ? There's a few short vids on Youtube from a few years ago but not much else.

Re: Tomocichla Asfraci ?

Hi Mark. There's 18 survivors out of about 23 that hatched, they're about 3/4" now, growing really fast! Sorry the pics not that good. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v363/Grummie2/20150122_173736_zpsebafb334.jpg Hoping for a better success next time.....they're almost ready to spawn again now.....

Re: Tomocichla Asfraci ?

Hi Mark, these are just over 5 years old, they're the grown up fry shown in the pics in another thread on here. Hi Lee, this species came to me when Ian Jordan owned Oddball Express, they were from Conkel originally, can't remember what year. Looks like these fry will be free swimming in about 10 hr...

Re: Tomocichla Asfraci ?

Hi Mark, yes, funnily enough I just read on the CRC the report by Bill Cain, don't know how I've not seen it before  . I'm certainly much more confident of a 'normal' spawning in the future. The pair is very well bonded, little to no aggression between them (the other 2 pairs I have don't get ...

Re: Tomocichla Asfraci ?

Hi Piotr. There is for me it seems a few challenges with this fish. I have never had a high hatch rate, the most fry I've ever raised was 6. Hatching time does seem longer than most cichlids, eggs are almost ancistrus sized. I breed lots of other species, so I am puzzled why this one is so much diff...

Re: Tomocichla Asfraci ?

Well, several unsuccessful spawns later and I finally have about 20 wrigglers, its early days to say if they'll be good, but the signs are promising. I'm fairly confident I can get a better hatch rate next time....I think I'm now going in the right direction  .

Re: Texas Cichlid Sex?

Hi Jim, looks to be a female to me. The dorsal seems to have dark patches in it which is a female trait, you should be ok with the male your having....it may still be a very rough ride though, have a divider ready.

Re: Tomocichla Asfraci ?

Nice looking pair Dave! Looks like they've been lip locking, females can give it out too! Mine are off the boil again now, they usually start up again after xmas. I'm going to lower TDS and pH for future spawns to see if it helps in fertilisation....tried all sort of chems but if the water is not he...

Re: Aequidens ID

Thanks guys!, I think you've hit the nail on the head! I'll try for some better pictures but C. bimaculatum seems to be a good fit, especially when compared to the pics by R. Stawikowski. I have a spawn from these growing fast and strong, it's good to be able to at least have some idea what they are...

Aequidens ID

These came into the store as 'wild caught aequidens sp.', anyone have thoughts on what they are? Sorry about the quality of the pics, the colour is an olive green with brown/gold too. Head shape seems a bit off for the usual suspects... they have an attitude too! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...

Well, I don't mind admitting I was wrong, not perlmutt. As Philippe suggested, looks like a lombardoi (female).

Yep, sorry to say 100% ordinary kribs. You would expect people taking fish to that kind of event to have some basic (in this case very basic) knowledge of the fish they're breeding. Sorry you've been duped!

Re: Tomocichla Asfraci ?

Well, that batch of eggs didn't make it, they ate all but 6 and those fungused the day after I removed them. The good news is a second pair in a different tank have spawned on a rock near the circulation pump. This pair are on their own and get along great (so far) but they were the ones I'll put th...

Re: Tomocichla Asfraci ?

The dithers will be just to give them something to focus on besides themselves, but I've found them to be quite good with each other actually (the females seem slightly more aggressive). TBH I don't do much with the water at all, its HMA filtered but I don't do water changes too often, contrary to w...

Re: Tomocichla Asfraci ?

Hi Mark, the male is about 9", female about 7". Jonny, these are 2 of the 6 that survived from the second successful(?) spawn from the original pair. The bowl is a breakfast bowl from tesco, I saw how successful Jim (notho2000) was with his large flower pots and these were the best I could do at the...

Re: Tomocichla Asfraci ?

Just got a spawning today, that doesn't mean they'll be any fry, but there's just 2 pair in this tank so maybe the female can look after these this time. No deformities in the adults, hoping the fry (if any) turn out good. I don't want to remove the eggs, they need a lot of oxygen and seem to be pro...
