Re: Cycling with a mature sponge filter

I usually just add the new fish and the filter simultaneously. As long as the new tank is lightly stocked I think you should have no problem.

Re: Katria katria in oxygenated current

Your research into the natural habit of Katria katria is impressive. Do you have any photos of your fish and tank? I did not keep precise records, but I believe that my first katria spawn occurred at sizes larger than yours. Best wishes.

Re: Tank size

I have 1M+2F Katria katria and 1M+2F Ptychochromis grandidieri in a 125G tank. I actually used to have 6 of each in the same tank and they did fine and spawned regularly. These (and other Ptychochromis spp) would be fine in such a tank for life and might even be ok in a 75G tank. I have some ~3" Par...

Paretroplus menarambo spawn!

I got 3 P. menarambo from my friend Victor in November. Last night I saw two of them spawning! The eggs were on a piece of driftwood facing the back of the tank. They are maybe a little over 3" TL which I assumed was too small for them to spawn. They are in a 100 gallon 72x18x18 tank with 8 Geophagu...

Re: Any advice for someone new to Madasgascar cichlids?

I think a pair of Ptychochromis would be fine in a 75 gallon tank. You can start with a half dozen or so and they should be fine for a while. If/when they become larger and do some damage to each other you can start removing specimens. I too have read that Katria katria has a mild temperament, but t...

I have had the same experience as duanest. Right after the fry become free swimming I feed them crushed pellets for a few days until they can take baby brine shrimp.

Re: 9: convict cichlid links

Thanks for posting the link to the inbreeding article. It's something I've always wondered about.

It would have been nice if they had started with a few pairs of convicts to see on average how many generations can inbreed before deformities appear.

Re: Nine New Australoheros Species Described

My Australoheros are fry from the fish discussed in this thread:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3740&start=0&st=0&s ... t=oblongus

I tried to read and look at the photos in the Ottoni paper but couldn't make much headway.

Here is the pdf:

I have some Australoheros that have been called 'oblongus'. I wonder if this paper will give them a real name.
