Re: Living with the Parachromis Giants

Thanks for the nice comments, we are really glad you liked those articles (as well as the nice comments about our site). Piotr, if you ever find the tank space to keep one of those giants, drop us a line. Perhaps it will be a nice opportunity to try breeding the P. dovii (provided you will take enou...

Re: Living with the Parachromis Giants

Hi Piotr, You are right to wonder if we keep them isolated (one fish per tank) and why we do that.. Breeding them is not an issue per se although there is some risk associated with this task, especially for the female. We have already bred the ex- Cichlasoma festae (a wild caught pair) as reported h...

Re: P. polleni question(s)

Hello my dearest friend, of course it is me.. Well, the sign that will tell you the fish are about to breed is the female approaching the male and giving him sort of a kiss on his cheek. If you see this, it is a matter of days (or even hours). The color of the male is not a sure bet. The color of th...

Living with the Parachromis Giants

We are sure most of you who have kept those large guapotes have a story to tell about their intelligence and interaction with their keeper. Well, we have summarized some of those moments here : http://www.mchportal.com/fishkeeping-mainmenu-60/stock-the-inhabitants-mainmenu-79/stocking/723-living-wit...

Re: P. polleni question(s)

Hi Francesco, My guess is that when your male kills all the other fish in the tank, he will spawn with the female. Typical procedure... When the Paratilapias think they can eventually get the whole tank to themselves, this becomes their top priority, before breeding. It is summer, the temperature of...

Re: menarambo spawn

What they mainly do is trying to outgrow their tank. When we got them we never expected them to grow so large. Literature stated 25 cm TL to be their final adult size but we already know that even 40 cm is not. When all five of them come close to the front glass their tank seems really crammed (a 2....

Re: menarambo spawn

Hi there, nice to see you here... and so active. Mind you, the eggs are not necessarily pink colored, we have had fertile eggs with an off white color, the color of the eggs largely depends on the diet of the fish. Do NOT regard whitish eggs as not fertilized, unless you can see fungus on them. Egg ...

Re: Tank size

Sidguppy has tried a lot of plants which probably tells you the whole story. In addition, you can include the Vallisnerias (any kind of it) in their menu. They will eat it with great pleasure. Mind you, they will also expose and eat the roots.. As for the Pe damii, my guess is that if properly kept,...

Re: Tank size

You are lucky, in this respect. Concerning Malagacy cichlids I can see three "generations" of hobbyists. First came the ones who introduced them in the hobby: the late Jean-Claude Nourissat, Patrick de Rham, Paul Loiselle, Oliver Lucanus, Laif Demason.. (possibly a few more). They didn't just introd...

Re: Tank size

Six Pe maculatus will do fine, no problem with tanks between 125 - 150 gallons. Pe menarambo get large, much larger than their cousins, you can't keep 6 of them in this kind of tank. A 2.5 (8 foot we believe) tank is the least you can use to house 6 adults in. We have got 5 adults (6 years old) and ...

Re: menarambo spawn

If the eggs are not fertilized, you will see them turning white very quickly, if the parents don't eat them on the spot. If the eggs are fertile, you can leave them with the parents (quite a few hobbyists have had luck with this option) or remove them and hatch them artificially, in their own tank. ...

MCH Portal launching

Dear all, Those of you who have been reading Malawi Cichlid Homepage ( http://www.malawicichlidhomepage.com ) will know that we have not been doing the regular monthly updates for a while due to serious technical problems. We have now relocated and restructured the site to allow for much better func...

Re: No more exports?

Not much has changed, to the best of my knowledge. There are some sporadic expeditions (mainly sponsored by Institutions) but not much is taken out of the country. People like Alex Saunders, Patrick de Rham and Paul Loiselle might have a say here. We all hope things are going to change although the ...

Re: Looking for Paretroplus kieneri and damii

Cichlasoman, I am moving (permanently) to UK at the end of this year so things may be a bit more easy for the transportation of fish across the Atlantic. If you can do some search on this, let me know. I only have a few fry at the moment since I am in the process of reducing the number of fish I kee...

feasible plan?

Hi all, I have plans to build a large tank measuring 850 x 125 x 100 cm (about 10.500 L). The issue is that I want this tank to house New World cichlid species which may or may not live in harmony - which is the reason for this posting. The species I want to put in there are as follows: P. dovii (1 ...

The main buffer in water (freshwater) is (and should be) carbonates only. Phosphates, oxalates, citrates and many other buffers may exist but they will not be able to "hold" the pH of your tank should need arise. That apart, the metabolite which is always in the water is carbon dioxide released by t...
