Re: Sand for Discus tank

Cheers for the replies guys. Someone told us that i shouldn't use silica sand if i've got a planted tank. I want to stick plants in there too so does this mean i cant use silica sand? its nonsense, the problem is that its an un-fertilised substrate, so the plants dont really benefit from it (but th...

Re: stopping the image being cut off

I've got a 23" monitor, and when the browser is set to maximum I can see the image no problem.

however, I usually keep the browser at about 1024 wide, as I use the screen for several things at the same time. and therefore it still cuts the images

Re: Algaefix

as Dan says, treat the cause, not the symptoms. algae needs 2 things, nutrients and light. the nutrients are from several sources, first off, you tap water, testing for nitrate and phosphate will give you a good indicator, if these are high then its worth using a nitrate and phosphate resins to remo...

Re: how????

one thing I would say is volume is relatively unimportant.footprint is key.

knowing that and what you would like to keep will help determine how to stock the tank

stopping the image being cut off

given a lot of people upload images bigger than 800by600 it might be worth getting a mod to resize the images so that it stops the images losing heads etc. a quick google give me this http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=347539 http://www.unframe.com/en/info/air-box-for-phpbb.html its java...

Re: Illegal Use of Cichlid Photographs

This thread brings up a question in my mind: Is there an efficient way to search for misuse of your content other than looking at every site with photos and video? Unfortunately I've also seen someone can now steak your video from you tube even if you have embedding blocked! if you use fire...

Re: Peaceful cichlids?

A bit OT, but... I've seen a German Aquarist tank (9000L as I remember) who set auto WC for 10% each day and 40% once a week. :) ah, but then he's using a large waterchange to "reset" the system if you just take some made up figures a tank produces 10mg/l nitrate a day (this is a hypothetical figur...

Re: Peaceful cichlids?

however water changes and filtration will still be needed, as I can see this being difficult to do 50% water changes on (as I do with all my tanks) I don't agree with this point - if you have such a big tank you buy pumps which do auto water changes every day, or even hour. ;) an auto water change ...

2 spawns in seperate tanks simultaniously

Woke up to find that the Cryptoheros cutteri had spawned, had suspected as much, I'd even seen the eggs, but no more than that for a day or 2, thought it'd failed given their small size and age http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f69/PsYcHoTiC_MaDmAn/DSCN2207.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f69/...

Re: Peaceful cichlids?

first off, discus ARE cichlids, and WILL eat tetras given the opportunity the obvious choices to leave the tetras alone are dwarves (apistogramma, mikrogeophagus, pelvicachromis etc) however my suggestion would be to include various eartheaters. I dont know how you plan to decorate the tank, but I w...

was thinking acrylic, easy to cut and stick together.

only issue for me would be finding an opaque acrylic to use, only got the clear plexiglass available(easily) locally.

Filter Idea

basically, using a Korallia, on the basis of its turnover.

however unlike a conventional pump its not easy to design a built in filter. what I was thinking is that utilising top and bottom intakes.

any thoughts??

I feed all my fish New Life Spectrum (NLS) from cichlid fry through to livebearers. at the moment I've been supplementing the diet with some spirulina flake I won. but overall feed NLS near exclusively to all the fish, and I just use the 1mm cichlid formula, I buy it in the 2,27KG (5lb) buckets, and...

Re: BROKEN TANK HELP!!!!!

go to your local pound shop (type thing, don't know if you have dollar shops over there...) pick up a rubber-maid container, can easily get a 50g one, shouldn't be more than about $20 (if the prices are anything like the pound stores here) it'd make a fine temporary tank, and keeping an eye on the l...

just to confuse matters, the US use a different type of gallon as well. (and as far as I'm aware the Canadians use the US gallon as well. Imperial Gallon (as used in the UK) is 4.546 09 litres (is based on the volume of 10 pounds of water at 62 °F) a US gallon on the other hand is 3.785 411 784 litr...
