Re: Paratheraps hartwegi

From what I've read this species gets about 12". Do they just not like their own kind very much? Are they more tolerant of other species?

Paratheraps hartwegi

I have one of these guys, not sure on sex but was told it was a male. I'm looking to get him/her a friend of the opposite sex. The one I have is 5". I can get a few more at about 3". Will it be ok to keep them together in a 70g tank (48"X18"). Are they fairly aggressive toward their own kind. Any in...

Re: Thorichthys helleri

I didn't see this until today. I unfortunately did not have good luck with my helleri. They did well for a while then died off, one by one, I ended up losing them all :(

I believe the ones I'm looking at are from the same area as yours. Do you give yours a cooling down period? What temp do you normally keep them at?

Australoheros scitulus

Can anyone give me some info on these guys? I really like the look of them and am interested in possibly setting up a tank for them but would like some more info if possible. Does anyone here keep these? Just wondering how big they get, how the sex them and any general info on keeping them happy. I'...

Discus

Ok, this is for all you discus keepers. I'm playing with the idea of trying discus. I'm just in the research stage right now and trying to get as much info as I can in order to make an informed decision as to if I really want to do this or not. The thing that is making me the most hesitant is the co...

removing fry

I currently have 2 pairs with fry (C. cutteri and C. sajica). The fry from both parents are 17days old today and still with the parents. I want to leave them with the parents as long as possible, but I'm afraid to wake up on morning and find the fry all gone. How long is safe? Recently the sajica pa...

Re: sex me please

Well the current plan is to keep the oscar, JD and salvini for now. If down the road the sal gets to aggressive it will go, my oscar is my baby so if a fish doesn't get along with him it goes. Unfortunately my oscar is a bit on the aggressive side so a lot of fish don't seem to get along well....

Re: sex me please

I was thinking it was probably a male. Thanks guys. Any idea if a male sal would make an ok tankmate for an oscar in a 70g tank? I'm having trouble trying decide which fish would work best, I've decided the synipsilum will have to go due to size, aggression and different diet, but that leaves me dec...

Re: stocking

Well I think I'll get rid of the synspilum just to be safe, the search will continue, I'm having a heck of a time finding a compatable tankmate for my oscar!

Re: stocking

I've heard/read that V. synspilum isn't as aggressive to other fish as they are to their own kind. I already have both fish and so far so good. The oscar is 2 years old and 10" and the synspilum is about 4" and still young. If this works out ok aggression wise, is 70g big enough for the two of them ...

I wasn't sure where to put this since one fish is CA and one is SA. Can a Vieja synspilum and an oscar live in a 70g tank together with no other fish? Would you consider this tank overstocked?

Thanks

Cryptoheros myrnae

Does the female of this species develop a black dorsal spot? I've been told yes by some and no by others. While watching my little group today I noticed two lip locked and displaying to each other. The larger one didn't have a spot but the smaller one definitely did and also seemed more colorful. So...

Re: Thorichthys helleri

Well I picked up 6 small F1 helleri today. They are in a growout tank with my C. myrnae. I will post pics as soon as they are settled in, but they are still small so they aren't really colored up yet. :)
