Nicuragua - ometepe or San Juan cichlids

Hi all,

Does anyone know of any access to cichlids that are sources in the above area close to lake Nicuragua?

Am esp looking for convicts from this areas or other medium cichlids or fish for my biotope.

Thanks

Re: Best tank size for medium centrals

Swordtails are beautiful but not biotope correct;) The region I base the tank is the tributaries of lake Nicuragua like San Juan basin or Buen suceso ometepe. Therefore the dither fish are either astyanax, or Alfaro culratus, or some forms of poecila sp. unless you know of something else I do not :)...

Re: Best tank size for medium centrals

Hi Bas, Yes, its purely to do with the background im using and i dont want a gap:) Im planning on having two nics, two archocentrus, two septemfasciatus, 10 astyanax tetras, and a shoal of Rostratus - around 6-8. What you think with the change in dimisenions of tank, will this be ok still? Or maybe ...

Best tank size for medium centrals

Hi all

Will there be any difference for my central cichlids stock numbers, if I go for either one of these:

7 ft 8" tank by 3ft 6"
Or
8ft by 3ft

Essentially I'm asking if it matters to stock size taking the extra bit from the length to the depth?

Sump and pump idea - need help

Am considering the following: 3 foot tank underneath my new 8x3 tank (1500 litres) containing a eheim pump to bring water in form large tank to small, via filtration, and then another pump to take water back from sump to large tank. Would this work? Will there be issues with height or distance or wa...

Re: Tank stocking levels

Very helpful again, thanks.

One more thing about the rostratus shoal...

What ratio male and female should it be for that size of group?

Re: Tank stocking levels

Thats great Bas, very helpful. Would you say that i could likewise go with a school of alfari or logimanus without any rostratus? Also what about ultimately adding a Vieja Maculiadia (black belt) or would that be too much? Finally, as an alternative to Septems, would wild convicts from the san juan ...

Re: Nicaraguensis colouring

They are around 3 years and 6 months old. They are 6 inches (male) and 4.5 inches long (female). So they are still not fully grown. There is a full grown male A Centrarchus and female AC spawning in the tank and a sub adult 4.5" A Rostratus. They all square up from time to time but nothing ever seri...

Re: Nicaraguensis colouring

There's a pair of a centrachus spawning consistently in there. The tank is six foot by two foot. There is also a 4" rostratum in there, plus astyanax aenues and livebearers

Re: Nicaraguensis colouring

They are feeding fine, ph has averaged around 7.4-7.5, ammonia 0, nitrates between 30-40, etc and all other fish are well and breeding no problem. These nics are siblings and confirmed male and female. Anyone out there got any expert advice?

Nicaraguensis colouring

Hi all, my male & female Nics have once again both turned into a bronze colouration after doing so last year and then becoming colourful during breeding. Since then they returned to the dull colouration and the male has developed a line and the female lost hers. This happened in late autumn 13 throu...

Cryptoheros septemfasciatus

Hi all, does this fish ever live along side archocentrus Centrachus? Am guessing they occur in the same river or tributaries of lago nicuragua, esp Rio san juan? But ever together or do they fill the same niche?

Re: Buen Suceso, Ometepe, Nicuragua

Thanks for that info... Does anyone have info on the following? 1. The livebearers seen in the buen suceso on the Heijns dvd? 2. Info on Rhamdia catfish, native to this river, keeping in a central american cichlid and dither fish biotope? I think in terms of livebearers, know Alfaro cultratus and po...

Buen Suceso, Ometepe, Nicuragua

Hello all, i have most of the readily available articles / resources on this biotope, and have many of the available species from there. I was wondering if anyone here has anything else on this river and its species? I have the Willem H DVD & articles, TFH articles, but was looking for some more inf...
