No indicators

Hi all, I'm not sure if anyone else is experiencing issues with the site but I am. It doesn't matter what browser I use (IE - several versions, Firefox, Safari or OS (PC or MAC) I don't see any icons for each of the forums and I don't see ANY status indicators on each forum indicating whether or not...

Re: Stone bottom aquarium?

I wouldn't worry about that... there isn't anyone cleaning up the rivers and stuff piles up in there all the time. The only thing I would worry about is very good maintenance (water changes) and "proper" fish population in the tank (not over crowded). Personally I prefer gravel or sand substrate, de...

Re: Stone bottom aquarium?

I've done it. It is ultimtely just another "substrateless" tank. It worked fine for what it was. Dan

Re: Chuco Micropthalmus

I don't know the exact temps but Ive been in Rio Copan, Honduras and many others in Mexico, and Argentina where the temps were in the mid to upper sixties. We caught Crenicichla vittata in very cold water in the Corrientes, Argentina region. I know some very successful Cichlid keepers that cool thei...

Re: Chuco Micropthalmus

I kept all my tanks at 72-76 degrees, no higher unless a particular fish requires it (Herichthys labridens, Discus, etc). I also chill my fish in the winter much like you would South American cichlids. Most tank temps fall to the upper to mid 60s. I fed sparingly, to keep them trim, and had an autom...

Re: Stocking help!!!

My .4c (accounting for inflation) For that tank I would strongly suggest only fish around the size of Herichthys cyanoguttatus - this would give them room to grow, breed and hide. You could also have more than a couple fish. The tank is not large enough (with rocks/hides etc) to house the others to ...

Re: cichlid resresilience

Luck of the fishes was with you that day! I brought 6 pairs of N. beani back from Arizona in January a number of years ago. The boxes broke during the trip as they were jammed in the belly of a small prop plane when I changed flights in Pittsburgh... I watched as the water dripped from the boxes... ...

Re: Ridding tank of Malaysian trumpet snails

Assassin snails… but they are not guaranteed. There is had-a-snail but that also means you had some fish too. I would break down the tank, empty all the substrate, pitch it and start over… sorry but that is the ONLY way to get rid of them and that may not even do it if one or two survive in the filt...

Re: Oxygen tank setup and operation

Unless you need to ship a crap load you only need a small tank… the regulator will be the most expensive part. You'll get the tank and air fill at a place like AGA gas supply. Once you use up the tank you exchange it for another… DON'T buy a new tank you'll never get it back.

Re: Chuco Micropthalmus

Gorgeous fish! One of my all-time favorites. I had three pairs in the same tank breeding at the same time!! They are not very "strong" parents. They can be bullied off the nest. They are hard to tell sexes until they are about 5 or 6 inches - that's when they start to "beef up". Good luck with them....
