New Tank for Cichlids

Post by eddyfox » Sun Jan 04, 2004 10:31 am

Pam, I have just became a member and look forward to all the interesting and educational information that you have to offer.
We are just setting up a 65 gallon Cichlid Aquarium. It measures 36" wide X 18" deep by 24" in height. What kind of Cichlids can we keep to-gether and how many would be good for this tank size. Any other information would be invaluable. Thank you E d Fox

Hi Fox,

It is really impossible for me to tell you what cichlids you should keep! I am much better at telling you about a certain species, and why it will or won't work in your tank. I am not sure of the last count, but it is around 3000 different cichlid species, and since you are the one that is going to be looking at them, it is best for you to pick something you like to look at!

I would say that it is best to buy a book like Enjoying Cichlids, by Ad Konings, (http://www.cichlidpress.com) which will give you an overview of all cichlids, and help you narrow down which ones you like the best. From there try to do a biotope type tank, where cichlids that are found in the same area are utlilized as well as a tank decor that matches what they would find in the wild.

There are many cichlids that are just going to get to big for your tank, but by doing a little research, you will fiind that there will be plenty of others that will do fine.
Cichlid Power!
