Conservazione: Crenicichla jegui è valutata dalle organizzazioni internazionali di salvaguardia delle specie a rischio come (EN) Pericolo (2018). The biggest threat to Crenicichla jegui is the suppression of the habitat caused by the construction of hydroelectric plants. Crenicichla jegui is known from three locations: Baixo Tocantins Region (where it was built The Tucuruí hydroelectric plant), Baixo Araguaia, in Santa Isabel (where the Santa Isabel hydroelectric plant will be built), and Pedral de Itaipavas, in Conceição do Araguaia. After the construction of the Tucuruí hydroelectric plant, the species was no longer registered in the reservoir area (ICMBio, 2022).
