Conservation: Paretroplus dambabe is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (VU) vulnerable (2020). The Kinkony basin is moderately to highly disturbed and degraded. Seasonally, fishing pressure is very high. According to local fishermen the new species has suffered a severe decline in abundance in recent years. Much of the basin has been converted for rice cultivation and grazing of livestock. Little original riparian vegetation remains in the basin (Sparks, 2002).
