Original description as Petrotilapia chrysos:

ZooBank:F2758DE2-18C8-4145-8953-B612347E9CBE.

Conservation: Petrotilapia chrysos is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (VU) vulnerable (2006). The listing as vulnerable is caused by the fact that initially it was thought that P. chrysos is restricted to the two small islands in the southeastern arm of the lake, but since it appears to have a much wider distribution I would not regard this species at any type of risk of extinction.
