Original description as Apistogramma nijsseni:

  • Kullander, Sven. 1979. "Description of a new species of the genus Apistogramma (Teleostei, Perciformes, Cichlidae) from Peru". Revue Suisse de Zoologie. 86(4):937-945 (crc00147)

Conservation: Apistogramma nijsseni is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (DD) data deficient (2016). As all representatives of its species complex, A. nijsseni has a restricted distribution area. This, combined with ongoing deforestation and threat from illegal mining may pose a serious danger for the survival of these species. However, part of the distribution area of A. nijsseni seems to be covered by the Matsés Reserve (Reserva Nacional Matsés), established in 2009. Hopefully further projects will be implemented in this bio-diverse area to protect its treasures, including these small gems we call dwarf cichlids.
